3 I What is Imperialism? A) Imperialism (also called colonization) is the domination by one country of another country or region. Countries or regions controlled by another country are called colonies. B) The Roman Empire and the Mongol Empire were two of history's greatest early imperial powers. While imperialism has always existed, the motives or causes have changed over time.

4 II Causes for Earlier Imperialism

5 III Causes of the New Imperialism
Economic Political Social 1. Factories needed natural resources such as rubber & petroleum 2. Mercantilism/ New markets to sell factory goods 3. Bankers wanted to invest profits 4. Colonies gave Europe’s growing population places to move to Steam powered ships needed bases around the world to take on supplies. Nationalism. 1. Missionaries believed they should spread Christianity 2. Social Darwinism. Technological New technologies (gatling gun) and medicines (quinine)!

6 Causes of the New Imperialism Continued…
Social Darwinism applied the theory of evolution to human societies. UNLIKE evolution, Social Darwinism is pseudoscience (there is NO scientific evidence for it). People were classified into races with only white Europeans viewed as “civilized” and therefore, should naturally dominate other races. The “white man’s burden” was the belief that Europeans needed to spread their civilization through imperialism to bring civilization to the “inferior” races.

7 Rudyard Kipling, The White Man's Burden, 1899
This famous poem was a response to the American take over of the Philippines after the Spanish-American War. Take up the White Man's burden-- Send forth the best ye breed-- Go bind your sons to exile To serve your captives' need; To wait in heavy harness, On fluttered folk and wild-- Your new-caught, sullen peoples, Half-devil and half-child… Rudyard Kipling was British, born in India.

8 Causes of the New Imperialism Continued: Technological
1. Europeans had powerful armies and navies 2. Europeans had access to new technologies from the Industrial Revolution such as steamships & the telegraph 3. New medicines such as quinine to fight malaria 4. New weaponry such as machine guns In 1861, Doctor Richard Gatling patented the Gatling Gun, a six-barreled weapon capable of firing 200 rounds per minute.
