Bellwork Answer the following question on your bellwork sheet:
Of the causes discussed yesterday of the Great Depression, which one do you think made the biggest impact on the failure of the worldwide economy and why?
2
Today's Objective Students will be able to explain the causes of the Great Depression by evaluating primary sources and answering questions.
3
Directions: You will be given a handout with 3 primary sources (Data Sets) You will read each source and highlight what you think is important Then you will compare your paper with your neighbor – do you both agree on what was important? If not, come to an agreement. Then together, you will answer the question for each primary source on the back - "What does each Data Set site as a cause of the Great Depression?" Make sure your answer has an explanation of how you came to that conclusion after reading the primary source. You may site evidence from the source.
4
Bellwork On your bellwork paper, answer the following question:
Make a list of all of the key battles you know that happened during WW2.
5
How did the US get involved?
Key Events of WW2 How did the US get involved?
6
Today's Standard US.60 - Explain United States and Allied wartime strategy and major events of the war, including the Bataan Death March, "island hopping", Iwo Jima, Okinawa, invasion of North Africa and Italy, D-Day, and the Battle of the Bulge
7
Today's Objective – Write it
Students will be able to describe the various key events of WW2 in their own words.
8
Operation Torch – War in Africa
As Hitler's forces invaded the Soviet Union, Stalin urged Britain and America to open a second front in the West to ease the tension in the East – Churchill and Roosevelt didn't think their troops were ready for an invasion in Europe, so they came up with a plan to attack Africa – Operation Torch – under command of Eisenhower November 1942 – 107,000 Allied troops landed in Casablanca, Oran, and Algiers in N. Africa – moved eastward in pursuit of the Afrika Korps – Allied forces conquered North Africa
9
Italian Campaign The British and American forces moved to Italy next (Churchill's idea – Roosevelt wanted to go ahead and invade France) Allied forces conquered Sicily in the summer of 1943 – Italian government was shocked by their defeat and ordered that Mussolini be stripped of his power – King Victor Emmanuel III took power once more But then Hitler sent German troops in to help – battle 40 miles from Rome = hardest battle Allies had encountered – lasted 4 months and had high casualty rates Germans remained in Italy for a year after this battle – until they lost
10
D-Day https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mT3q8tba_lw
11
D-Day –txtbk p. 575 Operation Overlord – opening of the Western front under the command of General Eisenhower Attack on Normandy, France – to keep their plan secret, they made up a phantom army that they sent radio messages about – the Germans thought they were going to attack at a different spot in France 150 miles away June 6, 1944 – day one of the invasion – largest amphibious operation in army history (land and sea) 5 beaches – Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword – Omaha had the highest casualty rate Successfully opened the Western front
12
Battle of the Bulge
13
Battle of the Bulge 1944 – Americans took their first German town – Aachen Hitler's response = last ditch offensive – ordered troops to break through Allied lines to recapture Antwerp December 16 – 8 German tank divisions broke through American defenses along 80 mile front – they drove 60 miles into Allied territory, creating a bulge Lasted a month – at the end, the Germans had been pushed back, and they had lost more troops and weapons to recover
14
Let's Pause Of the above events of WW2, which do you think is the most significant and why? Explain your answer.
15
Pacific Theater – Bataan Death March
After Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, they invaded the Philippines – within a month, the Japanese had taken Manila – the capital US-Filipino forces held out for 3 months, but then they were forced to surrender Captured American and Filipino POWs were forced to march approximately 65 miles to a new location – cruel treatment by captors and starvation = thousands and thousands of POWs died Relocated to a POW camp, where more died General MacArthur swore that he would return one day after FDR ordered him to leave.
16
Midway Americans broke Japanese code & knew they were heading to Midway Americans caught the Japanese by surprise – bombed their fleet, and in the end, Japanese lost four aircraft carriers, a cruiser, and 250 planes Turning point in the Pacific War – led to Allies adopting a new strategy...
17
Island Hopping After the Battle of Midway, Allied forces began "hopping" from island to island, moving closer to Japan Once they won an island, they would use it as a fuel station – helped them get closer to Japan
18
Iwo Jima
19
Iwo Jima After Americans returned to the Philippines and liberated American POWs (yay!), they headed for Iwo Jima – from here, heavily loaded bombers would be able to make it to Japan Perhaps the most heavily defended spots, with 20,700 Japanese troops entrenched in tunnels and caves Over 6,000 US troops died taking the island – only 200 Japanese survived
20
Battle of Okinawa April 1945 – US Marines invade Okinawa – last obstacle between them and Japan Americans faced fierce opposition – even worse than Iwo Jima – at the end of fighting on June 21, 1945, 7,600 Americans had died – 11,000 Japanese had died Compared to what an invasion of Japan would cost, Allied leaders knew Okinawa was no comparison Hacksaw Ridge
21
Exit Ticket Based on the information you learned about the war in the Pacific, which of the battles do you think is the most significant and why? Explain. What do you think the Allied forces next step will be now that they have Okinawa?
