2 Figure 1 Ultrastructure of cultured melanocytes. Electron micrographs of melanocytes derived from nonagouti wild-type (C57BL/6) mice (a) and uwd/uwd stock (b) (see Materials and Methods). Arrows indicate melanosomes; N indicates nuclei; scale bar: 1 μm. 3 Figure 2 Ultrastructure of eye melanocytes. Electron micrographs of eye tissues from nonagouti wild-type (C57BL/6) mice (a) and uwd/uwd stock (b), pJ/pJ stock (c), and uwd/uwd;pcp/p6H stock (d). Specific layers are indicated: Ch, choroid; RPE, pigmented retinal epithelium; arrows indicate melanosomes; scale bar: 2 μm. 4 Figure 3 Autonomy of grafts. The recipient (mouse 4) was a wild-type C57BL/6 that bore a graft of dorsal skin from a wild-type C57BL/6 (a/a;Uw/Uw) and ventral skin from a homozygous recessive uw mutant (a/a;uw/uw) in close contact with each other (a). A close-up view of the graft shows black hairs within the borders of the a/a; uw/uw ventral graft (b). Most, if not all, of these hairs were zigzags and are surrounded by ventral hairs of uw/uw phenotype. 5 Figure 4 Phenotype of single and double mutant mice. Panel a: The mouse on the left is Mc1re/Mc1re; the mouse in the foreground is uwd/uwd; the light colored mouse in the right rear is Mc1re/Mc1re;uwd/uwd. Panel b: The mouse in the foreground is p6H/pcp; the mouse in the left rear is uwd/uwd; the white mouse on the right is uwd/uwd;p6H/pcp.
