3. Key Term: Characterisation
Characterisation refers to the construction of a character by a writer. This is achieved via two forms:
Direct Characterisation: The writer is explicit and states what the character is like e.g. He was angry and unhappy man.
Indirect Characterisation: The writer hints or alludes to the personality character through: speech, thoughts, appearance, actions and impact on others e.g. His eyes were tired and sunken like he had been crying for years. His blue scarf was wrapped severely around his neck and his brow furrowed.

4. Characterisation Challenge
Re-examine the text focusing on examples of Mr and Mrs Jackson’s characterisation. On the templates provided note down quotations you think are examples of either direct or indirect characterisation.

It is important that you have a variety of examples of characterisation. In the future it will allow you to demonstrate a greater understanding of the character and the work of the writer.
