November 2003 Hotspot Evolution Stephen McCann, Siemens Roke Manor Stephen McCann, Siemens Roke Manor

2 Objectives Study Group Proposal
Month 2002 doc.: IEEE /xxxr0 November 2003 Objectives Study Group Proposal Overall goal should be to define a standards ‚story‘ of how hotspots can be put together, in a consistent and interoperable manner. Bit more detail WiFi Alliance producing test plan, not standard interfaces. Stephen McCann, Siemens Roke Manor John Doe, His Company

3 Jigsaw QoS (TGe provides QoS over the air)
Month 2002 doc.: IEEE /xxxr0 November 2003 Jigsaw QoS (TGe provides QoS over the air) Handoff (not really 802 handoff) Policy (Network layer issue, IETF, but does it impact IEEE ) Mobility (same again, IETF, but remember that Fast Roaming is looking at ESS roaming) Stephen McCann, Siemens Roke Manor John Doe, His Company

4 Requirements What is required for a public access hotspot ?
Month 2002 doc.: IEEE /xxxr0 November 2003 Requirements What is required for a public access hotspot ? Are all the pieces of the Jigsaw known ? Is there a generic interface model to external networks ? Who cares ? Stephen McCann, Siemens Roke Manor John Doe, His Company

5 Hotspot requirements Authentication
Month 2002 doc.: IEEE /xxxr0 November 2003 Hotspot requirements Authentication Open security (UAM) – some text about this, also mention that this is the WISPr document. Closed security (WPA) – some text about this. Co-existance (Both) – Can this be currently done with existing standards and is this a question for i or someone else ? Securityv2 group ? Stephen McCann, Siemens Roke Manor John Doe, His Company

6 Month 2002 doc.: IEEE /xxxr0 November 2003 Jigsaw Technology and therefore interfaces must be defined by standardisation body. External interfaces should be defined by same body which defined the technology where possible. Test plans should be defined by industry. If test plans start to re-define the interfaces to the technology, where is the line drawn between technology definition and testing? Stephen McCann, Siemens Roke Manor John Doe, His Company

7 Access Network Interfaces
Month 2002 doc.: IEEE /xxxr0 November 2003 Access Network Interfaces Stephen McCann, Siemens Roke Manor John Doe, His Company

8 Wireless Interworking
November 2003 Wireless Interworking HLR AAAH 3GPP MNO Roaming Broker Mobile Client AC AAAH 3GPP2 MNO Internet W-ISP Access Network Home ISP AAAH Stephen McCann, Siemens Roke Manor

9 Month 2002 doc.: IEEE /xxxr0 November 2003 Who cares Who should standardise an IEEE public access solution. Should this be left to 3GPP and 3GPP2 What happens if their solutions impact the MAC layer. Are their solutions compatible with the output of TGe, TGf, TGi, TGk and TGn. Stephen McCann, Siemens Roke Manor John Doe, His Company

10 Month 2002 doc.: IEEE /xxxr0 November 2003 Way forward IEEE requires some extra work in the DS to define external interworking TGe, TGf, TGi and TGk have started to do this already with functional definitions Accounting/Charging ? Policy ? Should assess WFA, GSMA, 3GPP & 3GPP2 requirements placed on IEEE Stephen McCann, Siemens Roke Manor John Doe, His Company

11 Month 2002 doc.: IEEE /xxxr0 November 2003 Study Group Scope The scope of the study group is to consider whether there is a requirement to enhance the IEEE standard (and amendments), to add interworking capability to both cellular and external IP based networks. The intention is to re-use the output of existing Task Groups to form a complete interworking solution, and to fill in any gaps. Stephen McCann, Siemens Roke Manor John Doe, His Company

12 Month 2002 doc.: IEEE /xxxr0 November 2003 Motion That an IEEE Study Group be formed, to determine whether there is a requirement to enhance the IEEE standard (and amendments), to add interworking capability to both cellular and external IP based networks. If it is determined necessary, the study group will then create a PAR and 5Criteria for further work within a Task Group. Stephen McCann, Siemens Roke Manor John Doe, His Company
