4/3/13 Chapter 22, The Early Cold War Years Aim: How did President Truman, the U.S. & NATO work to keep Communism from spreading? Objective: Students will identify the events of the early Cold War and how they created a US and NATO policy of containment. Standard: RH2, RH4, WHST4 Do Now: * Recall: Why is communism dangerous? WORLD EFFORTS TO CONTAIN COMMUNISM…
EVENT MAIN POINTS (include how they attempted to avoid the spread of Communism) CRISIS IN IRAN (P.767) After WW2, the US & the Soviets promised to withdraw their troops from Iran. The Soviets did not withdraw & they demanded access to Iran’s oil supply. The Soviets also helped to establish a separate govn’t. The US secretary of state sent a strong message to Stalin, threatening military action if the USSR did not withdraw. TRUMAN DOCTRINE (P ) Truman assisted governments in Greece & Turkey by supplying them w money & military aid to avoid the Soviets taking over & establishing communist governments. THE MARSHALL PLAN (P.768) Give European nations American aid to rebuild their economy. This pumped billions of dollars worth of supplies, machinery & food into western Europe which weakened the appeal of communism & opened new markets for trade. THE BERLIN AIRLIFT (P ) Germany was split into 2. The Western part was West Germany & the Eastern part, East Germany. The US & France helped the West & the Soviets controlled the east. In June, million tons of supplies was flown into the Soviet zone which symbolized the determination to contain communism. NATO, NORTH ATLANTIC TREATY ORGANIZATION (P. 769) AN alliance where the countries involved agreed to aid each other if one was invaded or attacked. This stopped the spread of communism because of the strength in numbers but it also caused the Warsaw Pact which was a communist alliance.
