Describe the nightmare Offred has on pp
Who does it seem the protagonist is addressing in her retelling of this story?
Why might the author include flashbacks?
On p. 30, the protagonist says, “When we think of the past it’s the beautiful things we pick out. We want to believe it was all like that.” What does she mean by this? Can you relate to her suggestion?
Could you get used to seeing bodies hung on the wall of Chicago? What do we get used to that others might find disturbing?
What conclusions can we draw about Serena Joy based on her sitting room?
On p. 81, Offred uses the word household to describe the relationship she has with the Commander and his wife. What does this word mean to you? Do you think their relationship does constitute a household?
What does the Commander reference in order to justify having handmaids?
