1 The Inclusive Classroom
The Inclusive Classroom – Universal Design The Inclusive Classroom A framework for access and equity exercises

2 “Consider the needs of the broadest possible range of users from the beginning”
- Ron Mace, Architect - When we look at making learning content available to ALL students we tend to think of the extremes, students with physical disabilities such as those visually or hearing impaired, or with learning disabilities such as dyslexia. Our mind thinks “special accommodations” for students with “special needs”. However, we know that all brains are wired differently. Each student comes with different experiences and strengths, So, let's broaden our thoughts. How can we make learning content more available to everyone? In identifying concrete ways to do this, let's step back and examine the concept of universal design.

3 Universal Design Universal design is a holistic philosophy that focuses on all people, regardless of age, mobility, visual, auditory or metal ability. We purposefully design by keeping in mind the wide range of users, and focusing on usability and accessibility.

4 3 Principles of UDL Provide Multiple ….. Representations of the material Ways to engage with the content Ways to express what they know This can be extended into the online classroom … universal design for learning … providing all students equal access to instructional materials, eliminating or reducing barriers to learning the content, and providing multiple ways for student to demonstrate achievement. In universal design, diversity in participants becomes an advantage in the classroom, a sharing of experience and wisdom in creating a learning community. 3 Principles of UDL include: Provide multiple representations of the same material Provide different ways students can demonstrate what they know Provide multiple ways students can engage with the same content

5 Multiple Means of Representation of Material
#1 Avoid excessive reliance on text-based learning! Readings from a text Journal articles Youtube videos Outside web resources Lectures (print) Diagrams, Flowcharts, Graphic Organizers Echo 360 recordings you produce Audio Publisher resources So, lets look at some ways you can integrate multiple forms of the SAME material … For example, for the course content you can … provide Readings from a text Journal articles Youtube videos Outside web resources Lectures (print) Echo 360 recordings you produce Audio recourdings Publisher resources

6 Provide Multiple Means of Engaging with Materials
#2 Provide Multiple Means of Engaging with Materials Provide Study Guides Break large projects down into small submissions Use games Scaffold with instructions Small group projects or individual projects  For providing multiple means of engaging with the material … Provide Study Guides Break large projects down into small submissions Use games Scaffold with instructions Small group projects or individual projects Yes, this all takes time … to create, manage and then grade however, all your students will benefit!

10 Activity 2: Interactive Syllabus
Resources: Tools: Populr An interactive online syllabus is an intriguing idea. What are they? Evaluate the pros and cons in reference to UDL. What would you need to include to follow the 3 principles. Would you ever make one? The syllabus is one of the most essential elements of any college level course; however students often overlook the syllabus and therefore miss out on key information about the expectations of your course. Designing a syllabus that is better organized, visually more interesting, and engaging for your students is an interesting idea. By adding a clear navigation structure, multimedia, and interactivity, you can grab students’ attention, improve their ability to access the information, and clearly convey your key points.

11 Activity 2: Evaluate Course for UDL Principles
Resources: _0.pdf Evaluate this course as it applies to the 3 principles of UDL

12 Activity 2: Given a Topic, Design a Mini Course Following UDL Principles
Topics: Golf Making a Souffle Resource: _0.pdf Design a mini course in theory about golf or making a soufflé following the 3 universal design for learning principles.
