What is the Civil War? What was the event about?
The Civil War was the war between northern states and southern states in North America. It lasted almost 4 years. It started in , when 11 Southern states seceded from the United States and formed a new country. The southern states named their new country the Confederate States of America. The reason why America went to war with themselves was because people in the south wanted to keep the slaves, and people in the north wanted to let the slaves go free to live there lives. That is the reason why the southern states declared war. Also, the southern states wanted to keep the slaves because it cost them less to keep slaves rather than to pay men or women to work for them. They don’t have to pay the slaves to do any of the work. It impacted New York because, in 1860, when Lincoln became president, the southern people worried that Lincoln was going to free the slaves. That is the whole reason why The Civil War was fought, to let slaves go and to keep slaves. How did the event you are researching affect the New York that we live in today?
The Civil War impacted New York because in 1860, when Lincoln became President, the Southern people worried that Lincoln was going to free the slaves. The reason why the Southern people worried is because the didn’t want to work. They wanted the slaves to work for them, but the Northern people wanted to let the slaves go free. This led to the Civil War. New York was one of the first states to pass a law stating that there will be no slaves in It impacted New York because a lot of people from N.Y died fighting for the freedom of African-Americans. Also after the war African –Americans came to New York to build communities. Banks,Beyer,Contreras,Craven,Billings,McFarland,Parker [2000] New York Adventures In Time And Place/Macmillan/McGraw-Hill
