1 Recap Respiratory System

2 Do It Now …. Work out VE using this formula ….
TV = 500 ML TV = 600ML TV = 800ML F = F = F = 13 VE = 5000ML VE = 5400ML VE = 10400ML = 5l/min = 5.4l/min = 10.4l/min

3 Where are we?? 12th March = Recap on definitions
19th March = Gaseous Exchange 20th March = Anaerobic vs Aerobic systems 27th March = Test

4 What were they?? Breathing Rate – The frequency of breathing measure in breaths per minute – Stopwatch for 60seconds. (Average breaths per minute) Tidal Volume – The amount of air breathed in or out with each normal breath. Lung Volume Bag – ml (Average 500ml – bottle of coke) Minute Ventilation – Total volume of air entering the lungs per minute. l/min – tv x br (Average 6-7.5l/min) During exercise each increases: 40-60 3-4l 120l/min – smaller individuals 180l/min – larger well trained athletes

5 Effects of Exercise on Respiratory system
YOU said STE of respiratory were ….. Higher breathing rate? Deeper breaths? LTE of exercise on Respiratory are? Increase strength of diaphragm & Intercostals. Greater number of alveoli. Increased ability of the lungs to extract oxygen from the air. Extension: How will LTE effect resting volumes??

6 What does this mean on performance/athletes?
Who would have a greater TV or lower BR? Why? Archer vs Cross Country Skier Curler vs Swimmer Extension: Name 2 contrasting athletes where one would have a greater TV and lower F.

7 Exam Question .. Describe the role of the diaphragm and intercostals in creating one breath in (inspiration) (2) Intercostal muscles contract forcing rib cage up and out (greater volume/increase of size of chest). Decrease in the lung pressure forcing oxygen in.

8

9 What’s wrong here??

10 Task Create a presentation on the definitions of the respiratory system. L7-9 = List, explain, show how to test and can show the long term effects of exercise on the respiratory system providing sporting examples. L4-7 = Lists, explains and shows how to test each. L1-4 = Lists all the definitions of the respiratory system.
