1 Writers Plan Stories Across Pages
First Grade Writer’s Workshop Lesson 1.2

2 Writers Write True Stories About Themselves
Remind writers that they write true stories about them. They think about something they did yesterday, after school, last weekend, or last summer, Something sad, exciting, scary When they were a hero, helped or accomplished something Writers have lots to write about

3 Close your eyes… Once you have decided on a story idea it can help to close your eyes and to remember doing an activity. What’s your story today? Thumbs up when you have it. Close your eyes and remember doing the activity. Think of as many details as you can.

4 Oral Story Telling Time to open your eyes.
Turn and tell your partner your story today. Remember to use Who, Where, What happened, and end it with a feeling. Note: You will want to listen in on an oral story….with the child’s permission, write it down so that you can use it for the next instructional point.

5 Once writers have a story idea…
they can touch the pages of a booklet to say what they plan to write. Demonstrate touching the pages of a booklet with the oral story you wrote down from the previous slide. Point out to students that this helps them STRETCH out their story idea across several pages.

6 It only takes a few minutes to plan a story…
Step 1: orally tell the story Step 2: touch the pages of the booklet as you retell your story using as many details as possible Step 3: Sketch the important parts of your story quickly (sketch not draw) Sketch not draw will save lots of time in the planning stage. (Sell this as a very grown up writer thing to do). Less time on pics, more time on words. Students will be allowed to use crayons, markers, and colored pencils in the fancy up stage for publishing

7 Time to Write… While students are writing and you are conferencing, be looking for a writer touching pages of his/her booklet during planning.. And sketching not drawing.

8 Let’s Celebrate Our Amazing Writers
Celebrate the writer and show the class the writing that the student touched each page for planning and sketched pictures instead of drawing.
