Why Change Motor Oil? Remove Suspended Contaminants
Replenish Additives

Motor Oil Spark Ignition Engines Compression Ignition Engines
SA through SM SM: For all automotive engines currently in use. Introduced November 30, 2004, SM oils are designed to provide improved oxidation resistance, improved deposit protection, better wear protection, and better low-temperature performance over the life of the oil. Compression Ignition Engines CA through CI-4 CI-4: Introduced in For high-speed, four-stroke engines designed to meet 2004 exhaust emission standards implemented in 2002.
4
API Certification Mark
An oil displaying this mark meets the current engine protection standard and fuel economy requirements
5
API “Donut” (Gas) 1 - Gasoline engine oil categories
2 – Viscosity Grade 3 – Energy Conserving 1 2 3
6
API “Donut” (Diesel) 1 - Diesel engine oil categories
2 – Viscosity Grade 3 – NOT Energy Conserving 1 2 3
7
API “Donut” (combo) 1 - Gasoline engine oil categories
2 – Diesel engine oil categories 3 - Viscosity Grade 4 – Energy Conserving 1 2 3 4
8
Oil Viscosity Multi-grade oils such as SAE 5W-30 and 10W-30 are the most widely used. They are thin enough to flow at low temperatures and thick enough to perform satisfactorily at high temperatures. For use under all but extremely hot or cold conditions

Oil Viscosity
10
Conventional Vs. Synthetic
Conventional motor oils are derived from petroleum Cheap Many contaminants
11
Conventional Vs. Synthetic
Synthetic oils are replicas manufactured from chemicals in a laboratory Have a pure base Increase drain intervals 2-5 X
12
Oil Filter Used to strain the engine oil thus removing abrasive particles. Spin-On - can-like container Cartridge - look like small air filters which fit into a canister.
13
Lube, Oil, and Filter Remove Filter
Using an oil filter wrench, turn the filter counterclockwise until it's free. Be careful with it, it's still full of old oil.
14
Lube, Oil, and Filter Prepare Filter Clean filter mounting surface
Lubricate the rubber gasket on the end of the filter with some new oil. Prime filter (if feasible)
15
Lube, Oil, and Filter Install Filter
You don't need a wrench to install the new oil filter 3/4 to 1 Full turn after the gasket touches the housing
