Safe to Learn Act Overview
Subcabinet (Governing Board) and Advisory Board Expanded the MD Center for School Safety Moved from independent unit in the State Police to an independent unit within MSDE Model policy for school safety assessment teams School Safety Coordinators, school safety evaluations, and emergency plans School Mental Health Coordinators School Resource Officers (SROs) Curriculum Data collection and reporting Funding for: Grants for safety related operating and capital projects MSDE grants for school safety Safety assessment grants MD Center for School Safety positions Very specific timelines Source: MABE 2018 Session Highlight: The Safe to Lean Act

Maryland Center for School Safety
Promotes school and community training Provides technical assistance, resources, and evaluation services to schools, school systems, organizations, and agencies serving children, youth, and families Preschools through college (including private, public, and parochial schools) Certify school safety coordinators Consult with school systems on safety evaluations Review and comment on school emergency plans Analyze data on SROs and develop guidelines for training After-action review reports to Governor and General Assembly Hate crimes grants Threat assessment guidelines Very specific timelines identified in COMAR (has met each to date) Source:
