1 The Neuron March 08, 2016 AP Psych Ms. Sallo

2 The Neuron Basic building block Always at work Tells us what to do
Acts as the messenger cell

3 Cell Body Dendrites receive stimuli
Looks like fingers-> reaching out to receive the message Axon sends out the message Myelin sheath is a protective coating Insulates the axon Speeds up the message

4 3 types of neurons Afferent (to brain) Sensory Interneurons
Connect to other neurons Efferent (away from brain) Motor Brain and spinal cord Sensory Afferent Motor Efferent

5

6 Neural impulse How is a message sent???
A message is sent with an action potential Depolarization- neural firing if threshold is hit All or none The membrane starts to break down potential for action Ends at the axon terminal (aka synaptic knob)

7

8 The Synapse Axon terminal Synaptic space/cleft
Dendrite or cell body of succeeding neuron How does the message travel from the axon terminal to the succeeding neuron???

9

10 Neurotransmitters Act like hormones
Housed in synaptic vesicles within the axon terminal Excitatory Acetylcholine, norepinephine Create Inhibitory Serotonin, dopamine, endorphins Stop or slow down Drugs work on neurons!
