Blog writing – a research framework
Write your 400 word blog. Apply your knowledge gained through research and analysis to probe the issue Research Skill Development (RSD) – model developed by education academics at the University of Adelaide Recognises the research process has six core facets… Use these facets to plan and shape your academic writing

For example… A blog post about whether a Netflix viewers are an audience or customers
Embark and clarify: What is our purpose? Refine the research question and ask why we are doing this? Who is the audience? Find and generate: What do we need? Find/generate information/data using appropriate methodology Evaluate and reflect: What do we trust? Is your information credible? Organise and manage: How do we arrange? Organise information and data to reveal patterns/themes Analyse and synthesise: What does it mean? Analyse information/data critically and synthesis new knowledge to produce coherent individual/team understandings Communicate and apply: How will we relate? Communicate results and applications of the research, heeding relevant ethical, cultural, social and team issues and the needs of the audience

Activity: Blog review In small groups – friendly help, constructive criticism! Troubleshoot any blogging/tweeting problems Find and read each others’ blogs (use the list on Moodle – add your blog if it isn’t there!) Use the RSD framework to review the blog – can you identify each facet? Can you make any positive comments? Bring a printout of a blog post ready to share.

Showed the same TV news report to 29 different viewing groups, including bank managers, schoolboys, university arts and teacher training students, shop stewards They found differences in the ways these groups ‘read’ the text Dominant reading – by those who shared the point of view of the producers Oppositional reading – by those who disagreed with the producers (it’s a beat up!) Negotiated reading – those who could see both sides The strike newsreel E (listen without sound – a volunteer to do a commentary please!)

Activity: in pairs Analyse an image. Ask yourselves:
Choose an image from my blog, or find your own ( Ask yourselves: What are these supposed to mean? What the signifiers? (what is on the page?) What the signifieds? (what does the image refer to?) What are the connotations? How is the image organised? What colours/style are used? What words are used? What different does the context make? What cultural myths and ideologies does the image call upon on terms of possible interpretations? Share with the class

Academic skills: time management
Think about your time so far at university. How much time are you devoting to each class? Are you keeping records? Lecture notes? Readings? Are you referencing the sources you use in your writing? Have you diarised your assignments? What system do you use? (Would you like to update diaries now?) Procrastination. How do you deal with it?
