Do gestures with students. Open one hand for compare and another hand for contrast and ask students to repeat

How to write summaries CFU: Call on non volunteer Define combine and related Have students repeat the word appositive What are we combining today? (sentences) What are we using to combine related sentences today? (appositives)

Partner Share Read this passage and restate to your partner what this paragraph is about Chimps live in groups and like each other a lot, but sometimes they fight. Because they don’t want to be angry at each other after they had a fight, they make up by holding a hand out to the other and kissing. They show they are sorry with pats and hugs. Then the anger goes away. Have students write answer on whiteboards. Hold them up Call on 3 non-volunteers Ask why did you choose “and” Go over conjunctions with students

Summary Writing Summary is paraphrasing something you read.
Example: Wild chimpanzees are rapidly disappearing. Some people are trying to solve this problem. Otherwise, chimpanzees may one day exist only in zoos. People are trying to save the rain forests and woodlands where the chimps live from being cut down. It will take many people working together to solve this problem. What is a summary? CFU: Ask students what is an appositive? Why is “our principal” an appositive? (because it gives more description)

Why is it important? If know how to write a summary it shows that you understand what you read. Read the importance and have students offer other reasons: call on non-volunteers Call on volunteers to offer more details

Steps for Writing a Summary
Read the passage Reread the passage and place summarized main ideas inside a flow map Circle main ideas that are related Transfer main ideas to flee map and make introduction Write supporting details and transitions Write conclusion Go to text Go to flow Go to flow Read each step and model process CFU: Discuss with partner how the two sentences are related , How are two sentence related(call on non volunteer CFU: Discuss the appositive that would describe the subject what word or words would be the appositive Go to flee Go to flee Go to flee
