5.6 More on Polynomials To write polynomials in descending order..
2
To write a polynomial in descending order:
The term with the greatest exponent is written first. The term with the next greatest exponent is written next, and so on. If there is a constant, it is written last. 8x4 + 3x2 –2x +5

Example 1: Arrange in descending order for the variable “x”
3x x7 – 4x6 4x7 – 4x6 + 3x + 3
4
Example 2: Arrange in descending order for the variable “x”
7xy5 + 5x3y3 – 3x2y 5x3y3 – 3x2y+ 7xy5
5
Example 3: Arrange in descending order for x
-5x5 + 16x3 + 5x2 - 7x -19
6
Example 4: Arrange in descending order for x
-x5y2 – 9x4 + x3 – x2y3 + 7xy + 10
7
Example 5: Arrange in descending order for x
x4y – 6x3y5 – x2y +x -17
8
Example 6: Collect Like Terms and Then Arrange in Descending Order
4x³ + 3x ²+ 5x³ -2x² 4x³ + 3x ²+ 5x³+ -2x² 9x³ + x²
