1 SAGE Lecture Spark [10/16/18] The Publisher of the Social Sciences

2 Jamal Khashoggi’s Disappearance: What We Know and Don’t Know
“Mr. Khashoggi walked into the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul around 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 2, for an appointment to pick up a document.” Khashoggi was a significant critic of Saudi politics. He has not been seen since his visit to the consulate and the government in Turkey has stated he was killed by Saudi officials.

3 Saudi King Orders Probe in Khashoggi Case
“‘The King has ordered the Public Prosecutor to open an internal investigation into the Khashoggi matter based on the info from the joint team in Istanbul.’” Saudi Arabia denies allegations of Khashoggi’s death and Turkish officials will begin a search of the consulate soon.

4 Apple Watch Worn by Saudi Journalist may Have Transmitted Evidence of Death
“Khashoggi turned on the recording function of his Apple Watch before walking into the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2, according to Sabah newspaper.” “The moments of his ‘interrogation, torture and killing were audio recorded and sent to both his phone and to iCloud,’ they say.”

5 Trump Joins Saudi Arabia’s Khashoggi Cover-Up
“Monday morning, Trump held a 20-minute phone call with the Saudi king and then parroted Riyadh’s denials to reporters.” “‘I don’t want to get into his mind, but it sounded to me like maybe these could have been rogue killers,’ Trump said, ‘Who knows?’”

6 Key Concepts Reporting Breaking News:
As news occurs in real time, previously reporting would emphasize journalists reflecting on news and writing up thoughtful pieces. Now the news emphasizes urgency—news that is fast and current. When news is reported before all the facts are out, how do news agencies and media sources navigate “picking sides” vs. objectivism?

7 Assessment Writing: What are the benefits or dangers of instant news? Consider how headlines influence our beliefs and ideologies. Debate: When current demand for news emphasizes urgency over journalistic quality or reflection, does this make for worse news? Can we have fast news that is also good news? Poll: Review the articles from this week’s news. Were they all entirely objective? Yes or No? Short Answer: How much do you follow news that occurs in countries other than your own, such as today’s focus? Current Events Quiz Jamal Khashoggi was a Saudi Arabian ____ of the Saudi government. He has not been seen since visiting the Saudi consulate in Turkey, and reports by the Turkish Government indicate he was___? The Saudi king has ___, and the Turkish government will soon ___?
