Pulling out the ‘gist’ in fiction
Identifying theme Context Clue Practice
21
What’s our PCR? You just read two passages that involved bullies. How are the experiences of Sarah in the story, “Magic in the Classroom” and the Wolf in the poem, “Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf” similar, and how are they different? Identify the key theme in both passages and discuss how the theme was developed through the main character. Be sure to use evidence from both texts to support your response. Our purpose for reading this text is to discover how the experiences are same and different for main characters as well as to find the key theme and tell how the characters developed the theme. This means we are going to summarize our reading so we can go back to the important parts when it is time to write.
22
Our fancy new organizer (aka paper)
“Magic in the Classroom” “Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf” Look-a new graphic organizer (aka a piece of paper) teach kids to fold it as needed. Since we are only dealing with two stories, then just fold it in half and put the name of the story at the top

Ok, here is the first story, See your teacher notes in your packet
Ok, here is the first story, See your teacher notes in your packet. Use anchor paper to chart your thinking as you read. Also, note that it is first person point of view so we are seeing the events unfold through this character’s eyes. CHART YOUR THINKING ON ANCHOR PAPER
27
Your notes-just a reminder- remember to put this on a large anchor chart.
28
The answers are A and B-you have to model how you came to the answer and WHY those are the answers.

This question perfectly backs up our purpose for reading
This question perfectly backs up our purpose for reading. Emma stood up for herself against Sarah trying to bully her. So, C would be a central theme of what we read. C in part B shows the result of her standing up.
