1 Sentences Parts (Complements) and Their Functions

2 Direct Object Definition: a noun phrase that receives the action of the verb in the sentence Subject + Action Verb+ DO Example: - Jimmy walked the dog. - Susie ran the track with her sister.

3 Indirect Object Definition: a noun phrase that refers to someone or something that is affected by the action of the verb Subject+ Action Verb+ IO + DO Examples: - Paula passed her father the parcel. -Simon gave his uncle a dirty look. -Molly gave her brother a cookie for lunch

4 Predicative Nominative
Definition: completes a linking verb and renames the subject Subject +linking verb + Predicative Nominative Examples: - Mrs. Jacobs is a teacher. -Elizabeth’s favorite food is pizza. - Molly is Allison’s best friend.

5 Predicate Adjective Definition: an adjective that is in the predicate and decribes the noun. Examples: - The patients heartbeat is strong. - His tennis serve is especially fast. - The cupcakes were very tasty.

6 Object of Preposition Definition: the noun or pronoun governed by a preposition. It usually comes right after the preposition. Preposition + Object of the Preposition Examples: - The ants get in your ear when you are sleeping. - Did you put the biscuits on the table? - That movie will change the way you look at things.

7 Appositive Definitions: a noun or noun phrase that renames another noun right beside it Subject, Appositive, verb ….. Examples: - Henderson, my good friend, sings hymns very beautifully. - I go to, Lovinggood, a middle school in Powder Springs. - Pumpkin pie, my favorite dessert, was served for Thanksgiving.

8 Sentence Subject the person, place, thing, or idea that is doing or being something Subject +verb …. Examples: - The speeding hotrod crashed into a telephone pole. - Ron's bathroom is a disaster. - That new boy from Paris puts a lot of garlic in his food.

9 Linking vs Action Verb Linking Verb Action Verb
connects the subject with a word that gives information about the subject, such as a condition or relationship. Examples: -William is excited about his promotion. I am putty in his hands Jumping into a pond could be dangerous a verb that expresses physical or mental action Examples: Johnny swam the channel. Mikey jumped off the bridge. -Leslie ran to get ice cream

10 Subject Complements a word or phrase that follows a linking verb and describes (predicate adjective) or identifies (predicate nominative/noun) the subject. LV Predicate adjective describing students The students are easily distracted. LV Predicate nominative identifying “He” He is the one that won the race.
