Squares of side 1m are used to make L-shapes.
Length and perimeter GM1.1 Core Plenary Squares of side 1m are used to make L-shapes. Find a connection between the perimeter of an L-shape and the number of squares it is made from. Preamble An activity where pupils investigate the relationship between the perimeter of an L-shape and the number of squares needed to produce it. Allow pupils to experiment for themselves. They should realise, or be guided towards realising, that the perimeter is the same when the same number of squares are used and that the shape of the L (i.e. the height to width ratio) does not matter. Encourage the use of correct mathematical language (and units where appropriate). Possible content Finding perimeters and pattern spotting. Resources Squared paper. Solutions/Notes Squares Perimeter (m) The perimeter, in metres, is found by doubling the number of squares used and adding two (or something equivalent).
