4. Southern Colonies: Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia
Geography: -- mild, long growing season, fertile soil, tidal rivers, wide coastal plain Early Settlers and Economy: -- English and enslaved Africans Economy:  large plantations (used slaves & indentured servants for labor)  small farmers made living from the land with cash crops (rice, indigo, tobacco, and eventually cotton)  Few cities, least populated and developed region  Major City: Charleston, South Carolina Lifestyle: -- Wealthiest social classes: planters and plantation owners. -- Role of plantation agriculture led to growing dependence on slavery to support economy of southern colonies.
