Progress under Targets 2, 3 and 4 of the EU Biodiversity Strategy.

2 Action 5-Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystems and Ecosystem Services
MS to undertake national and sub-national mapping and assessment by 2014. MAES WG, MAES pilot studies, MESEU contract. MAES reports 1 and II. MAES High-Level Conference May 22nd 2014. Actions continue throughout 2014

3 The MAES II report Takes into account the results of the six polot studies, the MESEU contract and reports from JRC and EEA and EEA ETCs. Reviews available sources of information and data relevant to ecosystem condition and ecosystem services. Hands-on workshop in JRC Ispra in February demonstrates the value of the approach.

4 The MAES High Level Conference-May 22nd 2014
To increase awareness of the MAES process and to demonstrate the value across policy areas. Focus will be on real examples and showing how mapping and assessment can be done and how it can be used Ministers, Commissioners, International Organisations.

5 Action 6a-The Restoration Prioritisation Framework
By 2014 MS are to develop RPFs at national and sub-national level. RPF WG and contractor ARCADIS clarified issues and challenges. 4-level model of restoration Next steps Importance of Finance

6 Definition of restoration/degradation 15% of what?
Some Key Issues Definition of restoration/degradation 15% of what? Quantitative and/or qualitative? Terrestrial and/or marine? History of the landscape/site Level- EU, biogeographic, Member State ?

7 Process of restoration needs to be defined in a better way (see conceptual model Hobbs & Harris for understanding ecosystem states and transitions)  work with restoration levels!

9 Action 6b-Green Infrastructure
Communication adopted in May 2013. Guidance documents-regional policy, AGRI, Climate Change, others GI part of PAs, OPs and RDPs Future work –DG ENV, JRC and EEA.

10 Actions 7a-biodiversity proofing and 7b-No Net Loss
Studies, contracts and reports. Policy Options for NNL- report available shortly. Public consultation on No Net Loss- in preparation. Preparing for impact assessment and policy initiative in 2015.

11 Guidance document on GI and Agriculture.
Target 3, Increasing the contribution of agriculture and forestry to maintaining and enhancing biodiversity. Integration of biodiversity into RDPs-Natura, GI, Restoration (115 RDPs to be screened) Guidance document on GI and Agriculture. Committees, working groups and awareness raising.

12 Target 4-Ensure the sustainable use of fisheries resources.
Revised CFP Emphasis given to MSY DG ENV working with DG MARE on linkages between CFP, EU Biodiversity Strategy, Natura 2000, WFD, MSFD. Joint meetings of Nature, Water and Marine Directors in Vilnius.
