2. What are Higher or Degree Apprenticeships?
An opportunity to:
Earn while you learn – degree without debt!
By the end of this presentation you will know more than you do know…hopefully!

3. What is an apprenticeship?
Qualifications that combine an 80/20 split of your time
A qualification led by employers - you spend most of your time with them
HE (18+) without the need for a tuition loan (up to £9250pa)
You will be paid at least the minimum wage
HE courses level 4 – 7 (Foundation degree to Masters)
A professional qualification and a degree, if you study a degree apprenticeship
80% paid work – hands on experience; you train while you work with some high quality, prestigious companies in loads of different industries and you get paid a salary!
20% of your time set aside for learning – normally at a further education college, university or other training provider.
Start a long-term career path with the possibility of higher earnings.
A levels are level 3 quals – Btecs can be Level 2 or 3

What do apprentices do?
“Apprentices spend most of their first year at college, learning the fundamentals of engineering. Practical experience of the workplace takes place in a manufacturing plant or vehicle workshop outside term-time. Attendance at college drops down to two days per week in the second year, while attendance at work increases. This is later followed by block-release study towards BEng Applied Engineering at University”

There is a year on year increase in higher and degree apprenticeships
2014/15: 100 starts 2016/17: 1,700 starts
Job sectors include Automotive, Digital, Engineering, Chartered Surveying, Aerospace and Nuclear.

6. Higher Apprenticeship (HA) - Levels 4 - 7
A HA has to last at least one year but to achieve a full degree this could be 3 years+
Level 4 and 5 – equivalent to a HE Certificate, HE Diploma or a Foundation Degree Level 6 – equivalent to a Honours Degree
Level 7 – Masters Degree

7. Degree Apprenticeship (DA) - Levels 6 & 7
DA has to last at least one year but in most cases lasts 3 years
DA achieve a full Honours degree as a core aspect of the apprenticeship
How will you be tested?
Academic learning AND your professional career skills
Two ways of testing
Either
A fully-integrated degree (Academic and job skills) or
A degree plus a separate final test of your professional competence leading to a professional qualification

DON’T FORGET………..They are paying the tuition fees for your degree (up to £9250 per year!)

Refer to the following briefly as a possible wage
Minimum wage for an apprenticeship is £3.70* per hour (if you are under 19, or 19 and over in your 1st year of an apprenticeship)
If you are 19 and over and have completed your 1st year you must be paid at least the minimum wage of £5.90 per hour
Take your time to read this – it’s a bit complicated

Level 5 HA – foundation degree still comes out at a£1K less than those graduating from a university – also HA three years of sector specific work experience

11. Don’t be under any illusions…. it’s hard!
Challenging job, working a min of 30 hours per week and studying for a degree
What grades do I need?
Unilever requires five GCSEs including English and maths and two A-levels
Deloitte requires 96 UCAS points, GCSEs in English language (6/7) and maths (4/5)
Network Rail requires A-level grades A-C, plus maths and English GCSEs minimum grade 4/5
The rewards are considerable
You need to be organised and committed and not phased by 4 weeks holiday a year!
Could take you longer to get your degree than going the university route but this will allow you to study at a slower rate and combine it with your working life
What grades do I need?
It depends what and who you apply to
Grades vary from course to course.
Some apprenticeships are awarded purely based on how you perform at interview. Others aren’t:

If you want to work for a particular employer, look on their website - most businesses have a jobs page for apprenticeships or vacancies.

16. WHEN to apply
There is no fixed deadline to apply, unlike UCAS university applications. Vacancies appear throughout the year, so it is definitely worth registering for alerts at
*Don’t wait until the deadline to make an application. Some companies close their recruitment as soon as they have enough candidates
Autumn – larger company vacancies appear
Jan/Feb onwards – majority of vacancies appear
Small businesses start recruiting a month or two before the job starts, so if you’re aiming to start work in August/September, you need to start looking from April.
Check what Level HADA you are applying for – will it give you an honours degree if that’s what you want?
