1 Romanticism

2 an artistic, literary and intellectual movement that originated In Europe in
the second half of the 18th century influenced by the ideals of the French revolution. It was a reaction against the Enlightenment and the scientific rationalization of nature. It emphasised strong emotions and feelings such as love, the experience of beauty, horror, terror and awe.

3 Characteristics Evocation or criticism of the past.
Cult of sensibility. Heroic isolation of the artist. Respect for a new, wilder, untrammeled and "pure" nature.  Helped in the emergence of new ideas.

4 Development Roman Catholic countries Romanticism developed after the rise of Napoleon. USA romantic Gothic literature made an early appearance.  British literature developed in a different form slightly later, mostly associated with the poets William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge An early German influence came from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

Germany Goethe, Hoffman and Eichendorff. French Authors Victor Hugo, Alexander Dumas Spanish authors José de Espronceda (poet), G.A. Bécquer, M.J. de Larra and José Zorrilla. British Romanticism William Blake (most extreme example of the Romantic sensibility in Britain),Jane Austin,Brontë sisters,etc.

7 DraculA 1897 novel by Irish author Bram Stoker.
Story of Dracula's attempt to relocate from Transylvania to England The battle between Dracula and a group led by Professor Abraham van Helsing. It’s a Victorian novel.

8 DraculA Themes such as the role of women in Victorian culture, sexual conventions, immigration, colonialism, and post-colonialism. It’s told as a series of letters. Main writers  Main characters.

9 DraculA It begins with Jonathan Harker,an English solicitor.
Jonathan went from England to Count Dracula’s castle. He discovered that he had become a prisioner at Castle Dracula. Dracula wanted to keep Jonathan Harker alive enough to obtain needed legal advice and teachings about England and London.

10 DraculA Finally, Harkers escaped from Castle Dracula.
A Russian ship was travellign with some boxes of earth from Transylvania. Dracula was looking for Harker’s financée, Mina and her friend, Lucy, that had accepted Arthur’s marriage proposal. There’s a patient of Lucy’s friend ,Renfield, that felt Dracula’s presence.

11 DraculA Dracula bites Lucy.
Seward, a Lucy’s friend, called Proffesor Abraham Van helsing. Some days after Lucy “died”, newspapers report children being stalked in the night by a beautifull lady. Van Helsing, Seward, Lord Godalming (Arthur Holmwood) and Morris killed Lucy vampire form staking her heart, beheading her and filling her mouth with garlic.

12 DraculA Jonathan Harker and Mina arrived from Budapest, and joined the coalition, who turned their attentions to dealing with Dracula. Dracula visited Mina and he created a spiritual bond to control her. Then he returned to Transylvania.

13 DraculA The group went to Transylvania, dividing them in three groups. Van Helsing went to Castle Dracula and killed his three brides. Harker and Quincey, an American friend, went to Dracula´s box, and then, Harker who killed Dracula stabbing a knife in his heart .
