WEEK 1 – LESSON 1 SEQUENCES Angel G. Bassig
2
To be able to recognise and extend number sequences.
Lesson Objective To be able to recognise and extend number sequences.
3
When a number follows a pattern, we call this a sequence.
For example: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, …. What is happening to the numbers?
4
Each number is called a ‘term’ of the sequence.
2, , , , …. 1st Term 2nd Term 3rd Term 4th Term
5
We can generalise each sequence with a rule.
4, 7, 10, 13, …. The start number is: 4 The rule is: Add 3
6
What are the missing numbers in the following sequences.
7
If we know the rule and start number, we can write the sequence.
The term-to-term rule is: Subtract 6 The start number is: 30 30, 24, 18, 12, ….
8
Write the first 4 terms of the sequence.
The start number is: 4 4, 10, 16, 22, …. The term-to-term rule is: Add 6 4 The start number is: 4, 8, 16, 32, …. The term-to-term rule is: Double it The start number is: 2 2, 1, 0.5, 0.25, …. The term-to-term rule is: Half it 5 The start number is: 5, 0, -5, 10, …. The term-to-term rule is: Subtract 5
