Hand out syllabus, textbooks: class expectations, etc. Fill out student info Seating chart Class Activity: What do we remember from last year? Homework: Organizer #1 (Map- fill in, due Thursday)

Things missing from syllabus:
Honor Policy: Complete homework on your own, in its entirety…no splitting up/google doc sharing, etc. Current Events: TBD….probably count as participation grade Office Hours: Lunches on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, room 236 or classroom Bring 3-ring binder THURSDAY!

Class split into 4 groups: Middle East Europe Former Soviet States Indian Subcontinent You have 15 minutes to prepare a 5- minute mini-class lecture, using ONLY a map as your guide in which you will give examples of: Each of 5 themes of geography for your region “Walk through” the history of your region Describe 2 current ISSUES in your region

Finish Russia/Indian Subcontinent presentations China MAPS: get back, go over Current Events discussion/class activity: Where to get current events? Basic Facts Basic history of China Big issues now (student presentations from HW) Writing About History: Writing Guidelines: handouts, advice, the BIG THREE: Historical Questions Thesis Topic Sentences!!! HW: Organizer #3 due Thursday (there WILL be a check!) STUDY for Map Quiz FRIDAY!!!!!!

What effect is China having on the rest of the world?” Essay will be in 5-paragraph form: Intro leading up to a THESIS SENTENCE AT THE END 3 paragraphs with topic sentence examples each example explained to relate back to topic sentence Conclusion that “says what you said”

Essay Rubric: Intro Paragraph gives basic background (10 pts)
Identifiable thesis sentence at end of intro (10 pts) Three solid topic sentences at the beginning of each paragraph that give a REASON WHY THESIS IS TRUE (20 pts) Plenty of examples from video (20 pts) All examples relate to the topic sentence (10 pts) All examples are explained to why they relate to topic sentence (20 pts) Proper grammar and punctuation (10 pts) Conclusion: exists, and says what you said (10 pts)
