Fig 2 Observed and expected (age-adjusted) incidence of postoperative atrial fibrillation among five body mass index strata. In the “obese” and “severely obese” strata, the observed incidence was significantly higher (p < for each). The Annals of Thoracic Surgery , DOI: ( /j.athoracsur ) Copyright © Terms and Conditions

Fig 3 Nomogram shows the conversion of calculated points to the probability of postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF). Instructions: To score a patient, first identify the patient's age on the age axis and find the corresponding points based on the age. Repeat this process for body mass index (BMI), gender, and race. Next, determine whether the patient might have heat failure, ejection fraction (EF) less than 0.35, hypertension, and on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Each variable corresponds to a different axis used to calculate the points. Sum these points and locate this value on the total points axis. Draw a straight line down to find patient probability of POAF. For example: Mr Patient (male, score 8 points), is 70 years old (40 points), is severely obese (20 points), Caucasian (15 points), has hypertension (9 points), congestive heart failure (12 points), EF less than 0.34 (7 points), and had on-pump CABG (9 points). The probability that POAF will develop in this patient is near 80%. The Annals of Thoracic Surgery , DOI: ( /j.athoracsur ) Copyright © Terms and Conditions
