1 New law in Brunei announced

2 A new law which goes into effect next week will have several punishments including adultery resulting in death in the small southeast Asian kingdom of Brunei. Beginning on April 3, any individuals found guilty of the offenses will be stoned to death, according to a new code of law. According to the rules, the punishment will be “witnessed by a group of Muslims.” Although the country's strict new laws were announced in 2014, and have been rolled out gradually, the latest phase of implementation was announced on the Brunei attorney general's website on December 29, 2018. Human rights groups were quick to express horror at the code, which will also order amputation as a punishment for theft. It is an example of sharia law which is an Islamic legal system and outlines strict corporal punishments the country wishes to enforce. The tiny, oil-rich kingdom of just over 450,000 people is located on the island of Borneo, close to the moderate Islamic nations of Indonesia and Malaysia. Brunei has grown conservative in recent years, including banning the sale of alcohol. The Sultan of Brunei, who also acts as the country's prime minister, was quoted as saying that his government "does not expect other people to accept and agree with it, but that it would suffice if they just respect the nation in the same way that it also respects them."

3 In Other News A fifth-grader who was injured when a fight broke out in her classroom died Wednesday. The student died two days after she was involved in a fight at an elementary school in South Carolina. Two men were killed and a man and woman were injured when a gunman opened fire in a Seattle street and then fled, leading to a fatal car accident. The suspect, who has not been identified, was taken into custody Wednesday after a rampage that Seattle Police Deputy Chief Marc Garth Green described as a "random, senseless act." Seattle police say that around 4:05 p.m. PT, a resident in the Lake City neighborhood walked outside with a handgun and approached a woman who was driving. He tried to carjack the vehicle, and in the process shot her, critically injuring her. Then the gunman walked into the street and fired at a Metro bus. The bus driver was hit by the gunfire, but was able to turn the bus around and get away. The gunman then carjacked a red Prius, shooting and killing the 50-year-old driver. When officers arrived, they tried to talk to the gunman. But the gunman closed the car door and took off in the Prius, with officers pursuing him for about a block and a half "at a high rate of speed.” During the chase, the gunman collided with another car, killing the other driver, a 70-year-old man. After a brief standoff, officers took the gunman into custody. A Wisconsin resident who got all winning numbers: 16, 20, 37, 44, 62 and the Powerball number 12, became the $768.4 million Powerball winner. It was the third largest jackpot in US lottery history. The Phillies play the Braves today in Opening Day baseball!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! March 28 is the earliest the team has ever opened the season.
