2 Figure 1 The Origin, Design, and Operation of the First Crystalline DNA Device (A) The tensegrity motif developed by Chengde Mao and coworkers. The motif is assembled from single-strand DNA, where the blue, yellow, and green strands represent the main structure, and the gray strands represent strands that bind to other motifs or can be changed. The four-way junction, shown on the right, is completely helical but is shown as straight lines for simplicity. (B) Schematic for the device designed and constructed by Seeman and coworkers. (C) The colors of the crystals can be seen to change with a simple microscope because the strands that are bound to the crystal have different fluorescent dyes (Cy3 [red] and Cy5 [blue]).
