Figure 1 Platelet Migration Promotes Bacterial Uptake and Neutrophil Activation (Top) After vessel injury in vivo, platelets are recruited to the site of damage. In addition to their well-characterized function in clot formation, some platelets are able to autonomously migrate adjacent to the injury site. During infection, this active migration allows platelets to collect bacteria and to increase neutrophil activation, including the formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). (Bottom) In vitro experiments demonstrate that platelet migration occurs through common mechanisms, including activation of myosin at the trailing edge of the cell, calcium signaling (Ca2+), integrin ligation (αIIbβ3), and actin polymerization at the leading edge. This migration also relies on paracrine signaling from nearby platelets immobilized on collagen fibers. Immunity , 16-18DOI: ( /j.immuni ) Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Inc. Terms and Conditions
