1 Enabling the business-based Internet of Things and Services
EBBITS (AKA the Intrepid project) Enterprise Interoperability and Collaboration in the Internet of Things: Requirements for interoperability and collaboration COIN workshop - Lugano 23 June 2010 Jesper Thestrup In-JeT ApS

2 EBBITS Consortium FP7 Integrated Project - 48 months - 9 partners - 12 MEuro budget, 1091 pms. 23 June 2010 COIN Workshop - Lugano

3 EBBITS is a platform where…
producers can integrate physical devices, systems and components directly into their optimising systems, i.e. managing workflows, people, processes, assets, data, information and knowledge, and turn them into useful, value-added business services or service components. producers can obtain interoperability between various subsystems in manufacturing environments across manufacturing cells, manufacturing lines end entire manufacturing plants, regardless of geographical location with the aim to support production and energy optimisation. producers can meet increasing consumer demands and regulatory requirements for authentication and traceability of their products by providing support for authentication and traceability through ubiquitous services integrated in wireless communication networks and existing smart home infrastructures. producers, in particular SME’s, of components, devices and systems can easily and cost-effectively network their products with mainstream enterprise systems in order to support higher value- added, interoperable solutions in an open architecture. 23 June 2010 COIN Workshop - Lugano

4 Project aims enable the convergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the Internet of Services (IoS) to the “Internet of People, Things and Services (IoPTS)” for business purposes introduce a Service oriented Architecture (SoA) based on open protocols and Hydra middleware, that effectively transforms every subsystem, device, sensor, tag, etc. into a web service with semantic resolution. support mainstream business applications with connectivity, interoperability and monitoring of products in their entire lifecycle, i.e. from early manufacturing stages to end-of-life. support collaboration by allowing for distribution of intelligence between the edge network and the centralised business/process information system and eliminate centralised gatekeeper lock-in of critical business functionalities. Hydra and Sensei have realized already IoT and IoS SAP and COMAu are realizing business application 23 June 2010 COIN Workshop - Lugano

5 Enabling IoTS technologies
The Intrepid platform creates an ubiquitous communication infrastructure that automatically and dynamically connects to sensors and devices in the physical world in e.g. manufacturing facilitiesor in private smart homes. to mainstream backend information systems, public authentication systems and regulatory information sources using semantic web services. to human users Physically, the Intrepid platform consists of subsets of production servers for data management, event management, security, application execution and communication. All servers interoperate in an open architecture on the basis of web services and are thus completely platform agnostic and scalable. A software development toolkit allows for rapid development of new Intrepid applications. 23 June 2010 COIN Workshop - Lugano

6 Breakthrough in interoperability
Semantic Knowledge Infrastructure Hybrid reasoning by connecting conventional data sources to semantic models Optimisation of real-time reasoning for huge amount of data Centralised and Distributed Intelligence Fusing sensor data and integrating into business process Ontology-based context model which allows automatic definition of data for service communication Context aware services handling different types of context as well as self-awareness aspects. 23 June 2010 COIN Workshop - Lugano

7 Breakthrough in interoperability
Developers semantic devices Hydra Device ontology Hydra Network Manages many device access protocols Bluetooth LONworks EIB RFID WiFi IEEE ports Physical discovery Network discovery Semantic discovery The 3-layered discovery architecture bridges between the physical level and the application level. We have developed support for a number of wireless protocols such as BT, ZigBee, RF, RFID et c. Once discovered physically a device is wrapped using UPnP and mad available on the network. The device can now be queried for more information, together with this the ontology is used to resolve what type of device has been discovered and what are the appropriate interfaces for accessing the services of the device. UPnP Wrappers 23 June 2010 COIN Workshop - Lugano 7

8 Breakthrough in collaboration
Physical World Sensors and Networks Novel P2P-based network architecture leveraging on opportunistic communication and information propagation paradigms Semantic interoperability between heterogenous WSN/ physical world technologies and enterprise systems Data and Event Management Layered Event Management Architecture for handling of physical, network, application and business events P2P-based event management Rule-based service orchestration 23 June 2010 COIN Workshop - Lugano
