Starting a race is easy but the winners are the ones who finish well. Let’s see how you can both start and finish matric well.

3 Let’s recap from Grade 11…
Formal Assessment is: This consists of all the tasks and exams which will be required of you for each subject during the year. Eg. Orals, exams, projects, essays or PATs. You should receive an assessment plan from your school that will help you prepare IN ADVANCE. Study strategies are: These are the study plans you put in place to achieve your goals. Study skills, strategies and styles This includes the use of different learning styles, techniques and study methods to prepare for a formal assessment. In other words what approach you take to remembering the information you study for an exam

4 Take a moment and think back to the end of Grade 11 exams
Take a moment and think back to the end of Grade 11 exams. Which of the following study skills did you use? FLASHCARDS- SMALL CARDS IN WHICH YOU WRITE KEY POINTS. MIND MAPS- A VISUAL LINK OF INFORMATION OF SMALL BITE SIZE BITS OF INFORAMTION. MNEMONICS – USING SOUND OR RHYTHM TO REMEMBER INFORMTION. SUMMARIES– WRITTEN/ SIMPLIFIED INFORMATION USUALLY IN THE FORM OF KEY WORDS OR SHORT PHRASES. TABLES- INFORAMTION IS VISUALLY GROUPED IN A TABLE TO SIMPLIFY AND REMEMBER. Take a few minutes to tell the members of your group which skills you used and whether you believe they were effective. Allow 5 minutes for students to reflect on their own study techniques. They may mention other techniques they tried as well.

5 Remember the first slide said we would be helping you FINISH matric well? Lets take a look at this clip Douglas Barton on “What do the top students do differently? Make notes while you listen on what you could learn from this clip. Listen for 15min and then allow time for learners to make a few notes after.

6 Lets recap… What are the 3 things that top students do to receive top results?
Allow learners time to give share with the class some of the things they learnt from the clip.

7 Write a short reflection…
In response to this clips take a moment to analyse how you have studied in the past and what you have learnt from this clip. Allow learners about 10 min to write this reflection while their thoughts are still fresh.

8 Have you ever heard of the Theory of Multiple Intelligence and how it works?
Watch this clip and see if you can work out which intelligence you have. This clip is 5 min long.

9 Quick recap…

10 Now its your turn…

11 Lesson 2: How to finish matric STRONG!
Exam Writing, SBA & NCS Lesson 2: How to finish matric STRONG!

12 It doesn’t matter if you’re studying English, Economics, Psychology or History, every exam can be approached in much the same way with these exam writing tips. We’re here to give you some help answering and writing exam questions that will show your knowledge to the person who reads your paper. Students need to take notes during the next few slides. Encourage learners to write the ideas that stand out to them and appeal to them.

13 1. Practice Past Papers There really is no better way to get exam ready than by attempting past papers. Most exam bodies should have past papers available online. This process isn’t just about preparing an answer for a specific question, it’s about understanding how you approach a question in an exam, how to structure your answer, the timings you should assign and what information will get marks. Download past papers from:

14 2. Read All Questions Carefully The stress of the situation can cause you to misread a question, plan your answer out, start writing your response and then realise you made a mistake and wasted vital time. Even though you generally won’t be writing answers to every question on the paper, reading all questions thoroughly will ensure you make the right choices and can highlight how much you know about the topic.

15 3. Manage Your Time This is where you need to be strict on yourself
3. Manage Your Time This is where you need to be strict on yourself. Once you have assigned a time limit for each question, you MUST move on once you hit it or you won’t be able to give the next question your full attention. Remember to leave yourself some time at the end to go back over your answers and add in little notes or pieces of information about the topic. You never know, this could help bump you up a grade!

16 4. Structure Your Answer Don’t just jump into writing your answer
4. Structure Your Answer Don’t just jump into writing your answer. Take the first few minutes to plan the structure of your essay. Use key words or mind maps. Remember an essay starts with an introduction then we have the body and finally you have opportunity to bring all your thoughts together in the conclusion.

17 6. Review Your Answers Thoroughly Smart students can still make the mistake of handing their answer book in without checking through what they have written. Proofread your answers as much as you can to correct any spelling mistakes and add any extra comments you think are worth mentioning.

18 Choose a spokesperson to give feedback to the class.
Now its your turn! I’m sure you have some great ideas for you fellow classmates. Take a few moments and discuss the following problems as a group. Healthy habits to cope with stress before and during the exam Handling “black-out” in an exam. (Where you suddenly cant remember anything.) Other tips for writing exam writing that have not been mentioned. Give learners about 5min to come up with some ideas and then take about 5min to allow them opportunity to give feedback. Encourage learners for their different approaches and ideas. Choose a spokesperson to give feedback to the class.

19 What would you say SBA stands for?
School Based assessment

20 School Based Assessment is the name given to all formal assessments done. These include things like exams, essays, PATS etc. But does not include your final examination at the end of matric. We

21 Why should you take School Based Assessment seriously?
It helps you see what you know and what you are still required to know. These assessments help you track your improvement over the year. These are the marks that will be requested by Universities/ Collages when you apply. Remember the higher your marks are the more likely you will be accepted.

22 What’s the need for a NCS?

23 Its important to work hard to obtain this certificate because:
It allows you to apply to study at a University or Collage. You could apply to get into the army, navy or police directly from matric with the NCS. This is often the basic requirement for jobs.

24 Are you ready? Use this time to get learners into teams of 4/ 6. Choose 2 specialists who will remain specialists through both activities. If the groups are 6 then 2 need to sit out for each of the challenges. If your school lesson is shorter than an hour then start with the first challenge. Give each group the sheet and turn it upside down. Allow them to start at the same time. Remind them that working as a group will make the task easier. Write in either a pencil or erasable pen. As soon as the group feels they are correct, they send a representative to go check with the specialists. A team may not run up to a specialist if someone else from another team is there. They must wait patiently in line. If they are correct, they will be given another clue. When the team feels they have this one correct, encourage them to bring it to you as the teacher so you can be sure who the winning team is.

25 The winner is…
