A moment of change in your life Writing is told in the first person point of view IN LITERATURE A moment of change in a literary character’s life Told either in 3rd person POV OR 1st person (character’s retelling)
4
Who experiences this change?
All people experience this journey You may be on a journey right now Many journeys will occur during your lifetime The way in which you deal with your journey shapes you into who you are
5
Stages of the Mythological Journey
Innocence Initiation Chaos Resolution
6
Innocence usually involves these thoughts…
Stage 1 - Innocence Belief system before a change occurs What is accepted as true until a conflict forces you to change your mind about your beliefs Innocence usually involves these thoughts…
7
What does innocence look like?
There is no evil in the world. All is good. If you do what is expected of you and are a good son/daughter/student, no harm or evil will come to you or your loved ones
8
What does innocence look like?
Loved ones are invincible and will never become sick or injured
9
What does innocence look like?
Love is a fairytale experience that lasts forever and brings nothing but happiness Mom and dad will always be together and always love each other
10
What does innocence look like?
You are the most important person You are the center of the universe Others will always care about your well-being and will always be there for you
11
Stage 2 - Initiation Is not so! Initiation occurs in a split second
It is that moment in time when you realize that what you had always believed to be true… Is not so!
12
Initiation Anything that causes a big difference in your life
Initiation Anything that causes a big difference in your life *An unexpected move *Death of a loved one *A loved one becomes sick *Loss of a close pet *Parents divorce *Betrayal of a good friend/s *Struggling with a addiction or the addiction of someone close to you
13
Pair and Share Think of a time when you experienced a big change in your life It doesn’t necessarily have to be something big like death or divorce, but something you struggled with Take a few minutes and share this with a shoulder partner
14
Stage 3 - Chaos Your whole world is turned upside down.
You now must struggle with what you formerly believed….and what new truth you may not wish to face. The following list highlights some of the feelings you may have during your stage of chaos Think about if you’ve noticed these behaviors in yourself
15
What does chaos look like?
Emotional upheaval Irritability Isolation or withdrawal from others
16
What does chaos look like?
A constant desire to return to the belief of innocence Denial in facing what you now know to be the truth
17
What does chaos look like?
Engagement of “negative” behaviors or coping mechanisms Disordered eating: Either a loss or increased appetite Addictions such as drug, alcohol, gambling, gaming, etc.
18
What does chaos look like?
A battling back and forth Trying to return to innocence, but also trying to reach a new resolution. A desire to accept what has happened, but it’s really hard to reach that acceptance In literature, this would be seen as a character in “conflict”
19
Some never leave chaos….but if you do
20
Resolution – Stage 4 If you finally accept the change -AND
You now have a new belief…you will have reached resolution Your resolution can be positive….
21
Resolution You recognize that death is a part of the cycle of life and sometimes a new life can help you move on
22
Resolution Perhaps your relationship failed but you now realize it was for the best and you can meet someone else
23
Resolution Perhaps the family has a new look, but it is a life change you can live with
24
Negative Resolution You may have accepted the change, but you are holding on to resentment You may choose to move on with your life in a way that creates: -Isolation -Anger -Distraction -Low self-concept But it is still a resolution, you are moving on but are attempting to protect yourself from future conflicts This prevents you from growing and learning from the conflict!
