BEFORE YOU ANSWER ANYTHING!!!!
Follow these simple steps BEFORE attempting the questions and you will be much more well equipped when you start: READ through the entire text once. READ through the text again, this time add WET annotations: W – WHAT is happening? WHAT does it mean? Brief summary next to every paragraph! E – What EMOTIONS are explored? How does a character feel? T – What TECHNIQUES are being used, and what is the IMPACT of each of these? On source - project 10 minutes to read the source and annotate then we’ll go through what you’ve come up with together! 1-2 – Make simple, limited comments. 3-4- Make comments that show some understanding. 5-6 – Write a clear and relevant answer. 7-9 – Write a detailed and perceptive answer.

Paper 1 GCSE English Language Paper 1 will give you an extract from a fiction text to answer questions on. For all of the questions except Question 1 you should use S-E-I: Statement: Answer the question (The writer….) Evidence: “…” Impact: Explain what effect this would have (This shows that… This emphasises… The word ‘…’ suggests…) Q2 and Q3 = 2x SEI Q4 3-4 x SEI 1-2 – Make some simple, limited comments. 3-4 – Make some attempt at evaluation. 5-6 – Give a clear, relevant evaluation 7-9 – Give a perceptive, detailed evaluation.

Question 1 Read again the first part of the source, up to ‘thrashing desperately around’. List four things about Katniss from this part of the source. (4 marks) Answer in full sentences Make sure you answer the question. Make sure you focus on the right part of the source. 1-2 – Make some simple, limited comments. 3-4 – Make some attempt at evaluation. 5-6 – Give a clear, relevant evaluation 7-9 – Give a perceptive, detailed evaluation.

Question 2 How does the writer use language here to describe Katniss and Peeta’s experience? You could include the writer’s choice of: words and phrases language features and techniques sentence forms. (8 marks) 2x SEI Focus on language (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, similes, metaphors, onomatopoeia etc). And IMPACT The marks are for your analysis so make sure you explain the effects of the writer‘s language choices. Suggests, emphasises, enhances, shows, forces the reader to… 1-2 – Make some simple, limited comments. 3-4 – Make some attempt at evaluation. 5-6 – Give a clear, relevant evaluation 7-9 – Give a perceptive, detailed evaluation.

Question 3 You now need to think about the whole of the source. How has the writer structured the text to interest you as a reader? You could write about: what the writer focuses your attention on at the beginning of the source. how and why the writer changes this focus as the source develops. any other structural features that interest you. (8 marks) 3x SEI Focus on structure: beginning, changes of focus and ending. The marks are for your analysis so make sure you explain the effects of the writer’s structural choices. Structural features: time, repetition/parallel syntax, mood, shift of focus, inside or outside etc. WHY has the writer changed the focus? How does this affect the text? 1-2 – Make some simple, limited comments. 3-4 – Make some attempt at evaluation. 5-6 – Give a clear, relevant evaluation 7-9 – Give a perceptive, detailed evaluation.

Focus this part of your answer on the second section of the source, from ‘Trust me…’ to the end. A student said, ‘This part of the story shows how brave and clever Katniss and Peeta are. I think they deserved to win the Hunger Games.’ To what extent do you agree? In your response, you could: consider your own impressions of Katniss and Peeta. evaluate how the writer conveys Katniss and Peeta’s actions. support your response with references to the text. (20 marks) 3-4 x SEI – 20 minutes Agree with the statement! …but be critical with justification for top marks if you can! E.g. Although this is effective… Write about the effect the writer creates; the methods she uses to create those effects; and how the method creates those effects.
