2 1. Canadian athletes have poor fundamental volleyball skills. 2. Canadian 16-18 year old athletes are around 100 hours/year short in the LTAD recommended amount of practice time. 3. Canadian youth are coached by volunteers, whereas other top countries use paid professionals 4. Very few athletes are training enough, in a quality environment. Target of 800 (per gender) across Canada for grades 10-12. What is the problem?

3 1. Provide training for 16-18 year olds 2 days a week for 6.5 months (100 hours). This allows us to reach the recommended 4 days a week for 9 months. 2.Use professional development coaches 3.Provide training for 14-15 year olds 1 day a week for 6.5 months (50 hours). What is the Solution?

4 5 VCCE programs are running – Richmond, Langley, Abbotsford, Victoria and Kelowna. Plans to expand to 9 programs in the Province 10 new coaches (2 missing). Primarily assistant coaches of CIS programs and head coaches of CCAA programs. What is happening in BC?

9 What does the program look like? Grade 10-12 High Performance Stream 24 student-athletes (12 boys, 12 girls or a ratio thereof) 6:00am-8:00am 2 times/week 1:6 ratio or better (6 athletes on one court) 1 hour Strength and Conditioning sessions per week (with certified coach, monitoring progress). 26 week program $1,625.00 program fee

10 What does the program look like? Grade 8-9 Stream 24 student-athletes (12 boys, 12 girls or a ratio thereof) 6:00am-8:00am 1 time/week 1:12 ratio or better (12 athletes on one court) Injury prevention services 26 week program $975.00 program fee

Head Coach the 2006 National Standing Disabled Team 5 th at World Championships in Phnom Phen Cambodia Head Coach Western Canada High School 2005/06 AAAA Provincial & City Champions Former Program Director with Alberta Volleyball Former High Performance Director with Volleyball Canada Level 3 NCCP. Level 1 & 2 Technical Instructor BKin from U of C 2006. MEd in Coaching Studies from UVic 2011

12 Male Coaching Staff Ryan Marsden Currently the Head Coach of the SAIT mens volleyball program – 2009 ACAC Champ and a CCAA National Silver Medal Coached Salisbury High School – Won 3 league titles and 1 provincial medal in the 3 years he was there. Founder of the Park Volleyball Club. Led an 18U Canuck Stuff squad to a remarkable 44-3 record. Capping it off with a Provincial title and a National Championship Has coached at Cariboo College (Thompson Rivers University), Mount Royal College, and an assistant coach at University of Alberta. 2009 21U Mens Provincial Team – First ever Canada Games Gold Medal for Alberta. Assistant coach in 2007 with the Mens B team – Silver medal at the World Universiade games in Bangkok, Thailand. 2010 he was named the head coach of the Junior National team.

13 Female Coaching Staff Art ODwyer Currently the Head Coach of the SAIT Womens volleyball program NCCP Level 3 certified volleyball coach who has been coaching with both boys and girls club and high school volleyball teams in the Calgary area since 1984. Assistant coach of the University of Calgary Dinos men's volleyball team in 1985-86 and 2005-06. Has coached club teams to four Provincial Championships and a National Championships. Played for U of C Dinos men's volleyball team for five seasons (1977-81, 1986- 87) and one year on the Canadian National Junior Team (1979). Bachelor of Physical Education degree (1981) and a Bachelor of Education degree (1987) from the University of Calgary. Along with coaching, educating youth has been integral in his professional career as a physical education teacher, principal and school administrator.

14 Female Coaching Staff Julie Young Recently completed her 3 rd full year with the Canadian Womens National Team (starting libero). Played 5 years with the UofC Dinos Full Bio to come soon…
