1
Colonies A very large part of starting a new colony would be to understand the agriculture and climate of the new land or territory.
2
What is Agriculture? Agriculture is the production of food and goods through farming and forestry. Agriculture was the key development that led to the rise of human civilization, with the husbandry of domesticated animals and plants creating food surpluses that enabled the development of more densely populated and stratified societies
3
Things to Consider climate, soil, precipitation, and location affect the growth of important crops that are essential for survival when developing a new colony.
4
Climate The weather will play a large role in what you can plant and what will grow well in that area. If little rainfall is available, then some type of irrigation system will be needed. It would be best to plant near some kind of water source. This is also important for watering live stock. If cold winters are part of the climate, then storing food by drying or canning will be necessary.
5
Soil Soil plays a big role in what you can grow. Rich black soil is best for growing crops. Sand or clay makes it difficult for growing. Usually the land by a water source will be richer in nutrients. Animal waste helps to add nutrients to the ground. I help make the soil rich!
6
Location LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION! Location is extremely important to the success of a colony. Consider water, land type, and access to other resources.
7
Successful Colony Many factors need to be considered to build a successful colony. The Agriculture of the land is one of the most important things to building a a colony that will provide natural resources to it’s people!!
