2 Sun studios The owner of Sun Studios, Sam Phillips, took a chance in 1950 to improve music in Memphis. Originally Sun Studios was called Memphis Recording Service. This studio is known as the “Birthplace of Rock & Roll” Today, you can visit Sun Studios to record music or to take a tour.

3 Stax records Stax Records is known for recording Southern soul music.
It was founded by a former country fiddler and a saxophonist. The selling point for Stax Records was the teamwork that others saw go into a song or recording. People working together was very impressive to those looking to record.

4 Elvis Presley ( ) When Elvis’ family moved to Memphis, TN when he was thirteen years old, Elvis loved to hang out on Beale street singing Blues music. When Elvis recorded a song at Sun Studios, It was played on the radio by Dewey Phillips and became a sensation. Elvis then began his singing career in 1954 with the Sun Records Recording label. Elvis Presley was so famous that he was the “King of Rock and Roll.” He played gospel music, rhythm and blues, country, and pop music. His style became known as rockabilly. People today still visit his house, Graceland, in Memphis, TN. Globally, he has sold over one billion records. He was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.

5 B.B. King ( ) King of the Blues Riley B. was known as “B.B. King”. He was a blues singer, electric guitarist, songwriter, and record producer. In 1949, King began recording under his contract with Los Angeles-RPM Records. B.B. King is known for his soloing instruments. He was inducted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.

6 Memphis, tn Memphis is known as a rockabilly town. There was a combination of country, rock & roll, blues, and jazz. With the rise of racial segregation, music was a common ground for some. Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, and Carl Perkins helped Memphis reach its peak with Memphis songs. Soon after, Elvis joined the army and the others returned to their country roots. Memphis is still known for their Blues music.
