BUILDING PEACEFUL SCHOOLS DOING DISCIPLINE DIFFERENTLY
3
The Children’s Institute tells us that preventing physical punishment is critical to:
prevent severe forms of child abuse, protect children from developing aggressive, delinquent and antisocial behaviours and to protect child and adult mental health.
4
Being a Parent You cannot raise children as your parents raised you because your parents raised you fora world which no longer exists
8
How would you define a safe and peaceful school?
A place of safety, belonging and happiness for all, where children's whole development is supported through the mutual respect, collaboration and accountability of the teachers, parents, community and children, based on shared positive values.
9
The Aim of Restorative Justice is to strengthen relationships and manage conflict and tensions by repairing harm as a way of building community
10

Retributive justice always asks: How do we punish this offender? Restorative Justice asks: How do we restore the wellbeing of the victim, the community and the offender?

I have learned that children are not tools. They are human beings
I have learned that children are not tools. They are human beings. They also have some feelings like any other person. So [the Regional Manager] and them have gone to investigate, to research among the children, how do they feel when they come across this and this and this. And they pop out all their feelings - which we didn't know that children can feel, can have those feelings. We thought that they are too small, that they don't think about those things, that they have said. So it was a shock to hear that children don't like this and this and this. So I have learned that a child is not just a tool. `Teacher at School A in the Kokstad Region

Conflict resolution and restorative justice is not an event
Conflict resolution and restorative justice is not an event. It is a process, it is something you grow into and the more you do it the more it becomes second nature. Oscar Apollis from WCED
