Tomorrow: Fill in the initial online preference form (This doesn’t commit you to anything, but allows us create optimal subject bands) On Monday, we will issue hard copy subject choice forms Complete this carefully and submit by Friday 12th
15
The Subject Choice Process in TCG
STRICT closing date: 5.00pm, Friday 12th April Where available, these will be your final subject choice for September Negotiation of some subjects is usually necessary Some change may be possible then, but isn’t guaranteed
16
Change of mind in September?
YES. No problem provided there is a place in the course you wish to move into But no discussion of this until then Final date for change of mind: 30th September
17
Important Factors to Note
You need SIX STRONG subjects for CAO points Subjects progress from Junior Cert – ask your teachers about the differences Choose honestly, not tactically Don’t rush things – talk to teachers, talk to Support for Learning Dept Late returns lose all “voting rights” and priority An extra subject can be a BIG advantage (but takes work)

LCVP – Leaving Cert Vocational Programme
A Dept of Ed scheme to improve personal and vocational skills Fits the 2/3 periods available to the“Extra Eighth” subject Students do the main subjects, but also two extra “Link Modules” Would suit a student struggling to find a 6th good CAO subject Would NOT suit an extremely academic student (66, 46, 28 pts)

LCVP – Leaving Cert Vocational Programme
40%Written exam 60%Portfolio Curriculum Vitae Enterprise Plan Career Investigation Summary Report Recorded job interview *

LCA – Leaving Cert Applied
Completely different (more practical) curriculum Less academic than the standard Leaving Cert Interesting courses, 66% projects – 33% exams Restricted Third Level options Resource intensive for schools = requires at least 12 students
