4 Essential Question The Week of 28 Aug- 1 Sep 17
Maine is the only state whose name is just one syllable. MONDAY We have been taught throughout our school careers that the Pilgrims came to America to flee religious persecution, we now know that most of them departed from the Netherlands. Why did the Pilgrims want to leave the Netherlands? Answers will vary, but should include the ideas that they did not want their children to be corrupted by the loosed Dutch morals and that there were few economic opportunities available to them TUESDAY Knowing what you know now, if you were a Puritan living in the Netherlands would you have made the trip to the new World? Why or why not? Answers will vary but should include discussion about the fact that the two sips that were supposed to bring the Pilgrims over to the New World were rickety, the voyage was dangerous, over half of the people died during a three month period once they arrived in the New World, and they had no idea what to expect on the far side. WEDNESDAY Knowing what you know now, if you were a Puritan living in the Netherlands would you have made the trip to the new World? Why or why not? Answers will vary but should include discussion about the fact that the two sips that were supposed to bring the Pilgrims over to the New World were rickety, the voyage was dangerous, over half of the people died during a three month period once they arrived in the New World, and they had no idea what to expect on the far side. THURSDAY Why were slaves more prevalent on farms in the Southern Colonies as opposed to those in the Middle and New England Colonies? The farms in the South were mainly cash crop farms and these farms were revenue producing and had the capital to buy slaves and servants. The farms in the other colonies were mainly subsistence farms and they did not have the necessary capital to but slaves. The crops grown in the Southern colonies were generally more labor intensive than those grown in the other colonies.
