Digital Library Metadata Group – Tasks
Metadata creation tool(s) for manuscripts and still images. A metadata model for all types of material handled by Fedora. Basic demands: Work closely with the Collection Department. Interoperability with all relevant metadata standards.

Manuscript metadata Ediffah – Catalogue for archival descriptions. Partners: Manuscript departments at Swedish university libraries and the National Library. But, no facilities for describing single objects within or outside these archival descriptions.

Picture metadata The Swedish National Library’s collections of engravings, photographs, postcards, architectural drawings, etc., are being catalogued on a relatively small scale in LIBRIS (National Union Catalogue). Example in: Dahlbergh, Erik, - Suecia antiqua et hodierna Need for cataloguing tools based on other standards than MARC. Starting point: Bilddatabaser och digitalisering - pattform för ABM-samverkan,

Some requirements for a metadata creation tool
Easy to use (also for unexperienced cataloguers). Reuse of information, for example in LIBRIS and Ediffah. Avoid repeated information. Authorized names and terms. Drop down menus. Metadata for digital objects should be added automatically. Conformance with different metadata standards. Possible to extend to other types of material. Different profiles for different types of objects.

A metadata model for the Digital Library
Title information A structure for storage and handling of descriptive metadata. Ingest of metadata from the metadata tool and from other collected objects such as e-deposits. Mapping and export of metadata in different formats and standards. A number of metadata containers and elements. And relations (between objects, persons, events, etc.). Inspired by MODS (Metadata Object Description Schema) and FRBR (Functional Requirements of Bibliographic Records).
