OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this course is to help students on an academic level focus on improving their writing skills for the purpose of completing a thesis. The course aims to enhance the composition abilities of students in all areas, focusing on proper structure, grammar, and idiom usage. Review and master material from last semester Refine personal writing style Improve familiarity with citations and plagiarism Improve understanding of various grammatical devices Improve structural analysis skills Improve ability to self-proof writing

ATTENDANCE AND GRADING
Classroom Participation means that you are always here for class When working with others, be respectful Try your best in class Assignments must be turned in on time Don’t be afraid to make mistakes! Classroom Attendance If you miss more than two classes without an excuse (i.e. doctor’s note), you fail the class If you are 10 minutes late, you will be marked as tardy If you are 30 minutes late, you will be marked as absent

Try to use English all of the time. All work must be your own. DON’T PLAGARIZE! Copying other’s work, cheating, not citing sources will receive an F You can use your cell phone in class, just not for texting! Participate – this is one of your grades. Sleeping is not participating. Most importantly, learn fervently!

You will receive material from the teacher. Have a binder to put it in! All material will be given to you by the teacher. For example, Astoria Oregon is a town on the Oregon coast well know for its starring role in the movie “The Goonies”. Today, we will take a trip from our school to Astoria through miles and time…

Assignments Journal – Every week, you will write a one-page, double-spaced, double-sided journal entry. This will be reviewed by others. Summary – To be done at the end of the semester. More information will be given out later. Student Proofreading – You will take a section of a paper you have already written. Two of you will sign up per class to share your paper. Other students will proof read along with the teacher. Final Exam – To be determined.

PLAGIARISM Plagiarism is strictly prohibited in this course.
Plagiarism is when a person takes another person’s work, ideas, or words and uses it as if it is their own. It is plagiarism even if a student did not intend to steal it but just wanted to use it. If one wants to use another person’s words, one must properly cite them using APA citation format.
