U.N. Security Council to debate Palestinian state

The historic Palestinian bid for statehood goes before the United Nations Security Council Monday, where it looks set for a largely symbolic debate in the face of a promised American veto. U.S. President Barack Obama has said he supports Palestinian statehood, but not without discussions with Israel.

In Other News Wangari Maathai, the first African woman recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, died after a long struggle with cancer. She was 71. One of Kenya's most recognizable women, Maathai won the Nobel in 2004 for combining environmentalism and social activism. She was the founder of the Green Belt Movement, where over 30 years she mobilized poor women to plant 30 million trees. Prices at U.S. gas pumps have dropped 12 cents over the past two weeks. The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular is now $3.54. The price is still 85 cents higher than it was a year ago, however. The editor of a Mexican newspaper was found dead, her body decapitated and with a note next to it. Another woman was hogtied and disemboweled. Attackers left her dangling by her feet and hands from a bridge in the border city of Nuevo Laredo. A bloodied man next to her was hanging by his hands, his right shoulder severed so deeply the bone was visible. In both cases, they were killed for posting denouncements of drug cartel activities. Boeing delivers its first 787 Dreamliner today. The plane is the first commercial airliner to be made mostly of carbon composites or super durable plastic. Those materials mean a lighter plane that Boeing says could use 20% less fuel than conventional airliners, making way for a more environmentally-friendly and cost effective aircraft option for airlines. Barcelona, Spain hosted its last bullfight. The parliament banned the heavily symbolic yet deadly sport. Bullfighting is an ancient sport that dates back thousands of years. And while it is now illegal in Barcelona, it is still legal in many other parts of Spain.
