3 Plot-the sequence of events in a literary work
Theme-the main idea or message. (the authors purpose) Setting-the time and place of action Conflict-the struggle/clash of actions, ideas, desires or goals in the plot Man vs. man Man vs. nature Man vs. society Man vs. self

4 Characters-people, animals, or things in the story
Antagonist-any force in the story in conflict with the protagonist Protagonist-central character in the story

5 Dialogue-the conversation between characters
Foreshadowing-the use of clues to suggest what action is coming Flashback-a scene that interrupts the action to show an event that happened at an earlier time Irony-the unexpected. . .a situation in which there is an inconsistency between appearance and reality, or between expectation and fulfillment

6 Compare-examining things that are the same
Contrast-examining things that are different Symbol-something that stands for something larger than itself Tone-the attitude the writer takes toward his/her work.
