How to Be A Leader 5 Takeaways from the National Student Leadership Summit Brooke Long – Everyone has a purpose, you just have to find your own and make sure everything you do is pushing you towards achieving it. Peyton Burdette - The importance of building personal and meaningful relationships. Luis Garcia Mazzarri – If serving others is beneath you then leading is above you. Sophia Bailey – The importance of different perspectives and the fact that there are different ways to lead. Renier Martinez – The importance of planning ahead and writing down your goals.

4 What is fhsaa? We are the governing body for interscholastic athletics in the state of Florida. We are a not-for- profit corporation that, while not appointed by the Florida Legislature, cooperates with the Legislature and the Florida Department of Education in governing interscholastic athletics.

5 What is Fhsaa? Fundamental Belief Purpose FHSAA Bylaw 1.2
Provides leadership for the development, supervision and promotion of interscholastic athletic programs sponsored by its member schools. Participation in these programs enriches the educational experience of qualified student-athletes by providing them with opportunities to compete in an equitable, sportsmanlike and wholesome manner. Fundamental Belief Interscholastic athletic programs play a vital role in the education of students who participate in them. Through their participation in interscholastic athletics, students are provided character-building opportunities to demonstrate Honesty Integrity Respect Caring Cooperation Trustworthiness Leadership Tolerance Personal responsibility

6 What is Fhsaa? Principles
Educational nature of interscholastic athletics—you are students first, athletes second Participation is a privilege, not a right Sportsmanship and ethical conduct must be taught and promoted Abide by gender equity laws Member school administrations are responsible for, and therefore must control, all persons representing their school in interscholastic competition (this means faculty, student-athletes, parents, spectators, and anyone else supporting the athletic interests of their school) Member schools must comply with FHSAA rules We promote diversity and demand respect for and sensitivity to the dignity of every person—no discrimination. Our rules promote competitive equity. Our association will adopt and enforce eligibility rules.

“We work to represent the best interests of all student- athletes by presenting their concerns to the FHSAA, thereby developing initiatives for future improvement. Our goal is to promote the advancement of sportsmanship and integrity by fostering an ethical, safe, competitive environment on and off the field.”

Promote sportsmanship through school spirit competition Increase awareness of mental health issues impacting student-athletes Identify key elements to improve the student-athlete experience How to execute Member schools submit 90-second to 3-minute videos for SAAC to evaluate at March 11th meeting SAAC members will distribute and gather responses to questionnaires provided by FHSAA for discussion at March 11th meeting SAAC will be divided into four groups, take questions from FHSAA Staff, and answer questions with the assistance of their peers for a presentation at the March 11th meeting

Inspired by Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) It was launched as a program to help promote sportsmanship, teamwork, and fair play Video submissions from last year : Choctawhatchee High School (Winner) Bishop Kenny High School The Out-of-Door Academy Fort Walton Beach High School

13 Overview Sunshine State Spirit Showdown
Videos must be between 90 seconds and 3 minutes Must also include at least 30 seconds of discussion about why school should be winner Cheers must be positive Sportsmanship is the overall goal for this program Submissions are uploaded to FHSAA website by established deadline and YouTube playlist is created with all of the submissions Fans will be encouraged to watch all videos and vote on favorites using Survey Monkey link on social media sites

14 Choosing a Winner Sunshine State Spirit Showdown
Fans will be encouraged to watch all videos and vote for favorite using Survey Monkey link on social media sites Fan votes will be divided by school population to keep competition fair amongst large schools and small schools SAAC makes final decision on winner which will be determined based on the following criteria: Positive sportsmanship Student body and community participation School spirit Originality of cheers Organization of the group/student body Overall fun Social media votes

15 Mental health Mental Health Needs Assessment provided by Dr. Amanda Alexander, Licensed Psychologist and Certified Mental Performance Consultant More about Dr. Alexander here: stretchperformancepsych.com In order to determine mental health needs of student- athletes, Dr. Alexander has composed a questionnaire for members of the SAAC to complete and distribute to their peers for evaluation at the Spring SAAC Meeting.

16 Student-athlete experience
Your task this year is to provide analysis of the FHSAA and provide recommendations for future improvements. As a team, please be prepared at the next meeting to answer the following questions: What do you see as strengths of the FHSAA? Where do you want to see improvements? How do you propose making these improvements? What do you want out of a championships experience? Should recruiting be allowed in high school sports? How has open enrollment impacted the athletic teams at your school? How would you put our member schools in classifications? What factors should determine the classification system? Student’s choice topic Additional group tasks include: Establishing your group name. Reaching out to fellow student-athletes in your school or county to include their feedback or ideas. Preparing a PowerPoint (or equivalent) presentation answering the above listed questions. Being available for a question and answer session with FHSAA staff following the conclusion of your presentation.

18 Peer Review Bylaw 9.1.2.2 – Falsification of Information
“A student and/or parent/legal guardian appointed by a court of competent jurisdiction who falsifies information to gain eligibility shall be declared ineligible to represent any member school for a period of one year from the date of discovery.” Policy – Impermissible Benefits “No school employee, athletic department staff member, representative of the school’s athletic interest or third party, such as an independent person, business or organization, may be involved, directly or indirectly, in giving an impermissible benefit to any student or any member of his/her family for the purposes of participating in interscholastic athletics, or to any student-athlete who already attends a school.”

19 Individual Goals What are your individual goals for the school year? Form a Student Leadership Group at your school Work together with fellow leadership members to organize a volunteer effort Report back to SAAC with results of volunteer efforts and achievements of your local school’s leadership group

20 Additional Involvement
Student Volunteer Program Opportunity for SAAC members work a state championship through assisting FHSAA staff members, acting as a media aid, helping with press conferences and awards ceremonies. Sectional Appeals Opportunity for SAAC members to see due process in action. Optional Local SAAC Meetings (Tentative): Section 1 – December 4 at Lively Technical Center (Tallahassee) Section 2 – December 5 at Trinity Catholic High School (Ocala) Section 3 – February 7 at Manatee School District Office (Bradenton) Section 4 – February 8 at St. Thomas Aquinas High School (Fort Lauderdale) Board of Directors Meetings Opportunity for SAAC members to present to Board of Directors to discuss goals and accomplishments of the committee. Looking for SAAC members to present on the following dates: Monday October 29 at 9 a.m. Monday April 29 at 9 a.m.
