Time dating
2
Bell Ringer What year were you born?
What are three key events that have happened in your life? In what year did they happen?
3
Objective Global Citizens can date events just like historians
Spi. Recognize the designations for dating time
4
Historians Need to Keep Track of Events!
To do this Historians use: Time Dating Timelines
5
Timelines A Timeline is a diagram that shows the order of events within a period of time Puts events in chronological order If a timeline runs left to right, USUALLY the rightmost year/event is the most recent
6
Most Recent
7
BC (BCE) and AD (CE) Events “before Christ” are marked with “BC”
BCE is the same as BC. BCE= Before Common Era Events after the birth of Christ are noted with “AD” meaning Anno Domini (In the year of the Lord) CE is the same as AD. CE= Common Era
8
Recent Controversy Today, BC is also known as BCE (before common era) and AD is known as CE (common era). The BC goes after the year Example: 476 BC Why do you think historians decided to change these abbreviations? The AD comes before the year (or does not need to appear at all) Example AD 1996 or just 1996
9
BC Counts backwards from AD 1 (there is no 0 AD, starts at 1)
So as you get farther back in time, the BC number gets bigger. Example: 3500 BC the wheel is used in Mesopotamia 3,114 years later… 386 BC, Plato starts The Academy in Greece
10
AD/CE AD, however counts up (years get bigger)
Kerri Strug won an Olympic gold in 1996 18 years later… Gabby Douglas wins an Olympic gold in 2012 AD 1 1996 Kerri Strug Wins 2012 Gabby Douglas Wins

Periods of History Periods: Blocks of Time
A period of 10 years is called a DECADE Example: The 1950s was a time of poodle skirts, but a decade later, in the 60s people dressed more like hippies
12
Periods of History Century: A period of 100 years
Note: We are in the 21st Century, even though it is the year Why not the 20th Century? A lot changed from the beginning of the 20th century (1900s) to the 21st century
13
Periods of History Prehistoric: The period before writing
Historic: The period after people developed writing
14
Objective Global Citizens can date events just like historians
Spi. Recognize the designations for dating time
15
Exit Ticket What is the difference between the prehistoric era and the historic era? Which event happened first: 30 BCE or 15 BCE?
16
Homework Using your book find 2 events from the BCE era and think of 3 events that happened to you in your life (can be from bellringer) and create a timeline.
