Read Job 19:23-27 What is Job experiencing in this book of the bible?
What does he seem to suggest about death and redemption? How might Christians understand this passage? Why do you think Christians have historically read this text on Easter day?
3
Read 1 Corinthians 15:51-57 Read 1 Corinthians 15:12-23
What event is St Paul speaking of in this text? Why do you think this text is historically read on Easter morning? Read 1 Corinthians 15:12-23 What can we learn from Paul comparing Adam to Christ? What theology is emphasized? Why is the resurrection on Christ essential for Paul?
4
Read St Mark 16:1-8 Is Jesus encountered in this text?
What is significant about women finding the empty tomb? (a great point for Apologists, btw) Since verses 9-end are added later, why do you think Mark ends at verse 8? Do you think there was originally a different ending? If so, what do you think it said? If not, why end with verse 8?
5
Read Romans 8:28-30 & Romans 9:6 -24
What does St Paul say about election (9:11)? Can you both embrace this passage and reject predestination? Explain your position. Does God love everyone? Does God love Esau? What does Paul speculate about “those prepared for God’s Wrath”?
6
Read Matt 28:16-20 What claim does Jesus make about his authority? How is this tied to the command to his disciples? Is this command given to all Christians? Or only to pastors (priests)? Why is this command only given to the eleven, and not all Christians?
7
Can we do what Jesus commands?
Read Matthew Chapter 5 Can we do what Jesus commands? If not, why does Jesus command them? If so, what does this look like in the life of Christians? Why does Jesus seem to make following God’s Law so much more difficult?
8
Read 1 Kings 19:7-13 Read Hebrews 1:1-2
Where does Elijah hear God’s voice? What job (vocation) did Elijah have? Do we still hear from God in a similar fashion? Read Hebrews 1:1-2 Does God still speak to us by prophesies? God spoke to us formerly by the prophets, then by His Son. Today, does he speak to our hearts? Are we all prophets? Is the historical Church wrong to think that God stopped speaking to Christians after the Bible was brought together and common?
9
As intro to Liberal Protestantism
Read Gen 6:9-8:5 Did this world-wide flood actually happen? How did all the animals from all the continents get to the ark? How did all the animals get back to their respective continents? How did all the animals fit on the ark? How many birds of each kind got on the ark? Two or seven?
10
Read Baptism Handout (on website as Verses on Baptism)
Do these texts imply that Baptism is… A. Necessary B. Strongly suggested, but not essential. C. Optional D. Unnecessary, but fine for the extra-spiritual. Why? Be sure to quote and explain at least one verse from the handout. Does Jesus imply that with Baptism, the Holy Spirit is given? Why or why not? Does Acts 19:2-6 confirm this?
