Unit 6: Meteorology

2 Air

3 Air Air is matter.

4 Air Air is matter. Air has mass

5 Air Air is matter. Air has mass Air has pressure

6 Air Air is matter. Air has mass Air has pressure The atmosphere is an envelope of gases that surrounds the earth.

7 Composition of the Air

8 Composition of the Air About 78% of the air is made up of nitrogen.

9 Composition of the Air About 78% of the air is made up of nitrogen.
About 20% of the air is made up of oxygen.

10 Composition of the Air About 78% of the air is made up of nitrogen.
About 20% of the air is made up of oxygen. About 0.04% of the air is made up of carbon dioxide.

20 Stratosphere Polar Stratospheric Clouds
The stratosphere is a layer of Earth's atmosphere. We live in the troposphere, the layer below the stratosphere. There are many different kinds of clouds in the troposphere. However, there is only one kind of cloud in the stratosphere! Those clouds are called Polar Stratospheric Clouds (PSCs). PSCs form at very high altitudes, between 15 and 25 km (about 50,000 to 80,000 feet). PSCs only form at very cold temperatures around -78° C (-108° F). Sometimes, in winter near the North or South Pole, temperatures in the lower stratosphere get that cold. That's when PSCs can form. Polar Stratospheric Clouds

21 Stratosphere The stratopause is the layer between the stratosphere and that mesosphere. The stratosphere is a layer of Earth's atmosphere. We live in the troposphere, the layer below the stratosphere. There are many different kinds of clouds in the troposphere. However, there is only one kind of cloud in the stratosphere! 22 Stratosphere The stratopause is the layer between the stratosphere and that mesosphere. The ozone layer is in the stratopause. The stratosphere is a layer of Earth's atmosphere. 23 Stratosphere The stratopause is the layer between the stratosphere and that mesosphere. The ozone layer is in the stratopause. The ozone layer protects the earth from the ultraviolet light from the sun. The stratosphere is a layer of Earth's atmosphere. We live in the troposphere, the layer below the stratosphere.
