The Growth of City-States
City-State (Polis)- -High city for temples 1. included an Acropolis (temples, rulers homes) -Lower city for markets, homes, etc. Regular festivals devoted to that City’s special God or Goddess

Early Forms of Government
Early Monarchs (when 1 person has power) Oligarchy- the Aristocracy (land-holding elite or nobles) gain power & take control As trade increases, merchants, farmers, artisans gain wealth & power

ATHENS: City of Democracy
Draco, 621 BCE- Draconian Law, very unforgiving Solon, 594 BCE- outlawed slavery, opened govn’t jobs to more citizens, gave citizenship to foreign tradesmen, encouraged exporting of Athenian goods (to help locals make $ abroad)

ATHENS (cont’d) Birthplace of Democracy- reforms made to give power to the people & individuals Democracy in Greece: -forming a Legislature (group that creates law) Assembly of Athenians -support needs of the people (making reforms and new buildings for the poor) ONLY male citizens could participate & citizenship was restricted- so many could NOT vote

Age of Pericles (461-429 BCE) Responsible for Golden Age in Athens
6,000 person Assembly- all males Began idea of Direct Democracy- “power in the hands not of the minority, but of the WHOLE people” As a citizen, it is your RESPONSIBILITY to take part in this government!!
